In the process of watermelon planting, the hollowing of adult melons has always been a headache for us. Watermelon hollow generally refers to the situation of emptiness or gaps in the melon, which is generally found after the watermelon is ripe and cut, and it is too late to recover. The occurrence of a large number of hollow melons will affect our economic returns, so it is very important to avoid this situation, today I will tell you about the causes of the occurrence of hollow melons and prevention methods.
Organisms are composed of cells, and the growth of cells can be simply divided into two steps: first division (the number becomes more) and then growth (body size becomes larger), and only when the number and size of cells are normal, the development of the entire watermelon can remain normal. In general, the root cause of watermelon hollowing is the imbalance between the growth of melon peel cells and pulp cells, melon skin growth is faster, and pulp growth rate can not keep up, which eventually leads to melon hollowness, generally not the use of bulking agent. Specific to our planting management, there are mainly the following five reasons.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="3" > first, the temperature is improper</h1>
The optimal temperature of watermelon melon is 25 °C-30 °C, and the critical temperature is 20 °C -21 °C. When the temperature in the early stage of sitting melon is lower than this time, the cell division of the melon part will slow down, resulting in insufficient number of cells in the overall melon. In the later stage of fruit setting, the melon skin expands normally, but the pulp cells do not have enough number to fill the entire inside of the melon skin, resulting in hollowness. In order to avoid hollowing out caused by low temperature, we should strengthen the temperature management of melon fields, pay more attention to weather forecasts or shed temperature meters, and take timely warming and heat preservation measures.

We all know that plants need to "create" the nutrients they need for growth and development through photosynthesis, and light is the most important "raw material" for photosynthesis. When there is not enough light during the fruit set period, the watermelon will be "malnourished" and there is not enough energy to maintain the growth of the melon. In contrast, the development of melon peel requires not many nutrients, and it is often able to maintain normal growth, which leads to the production of hollow melon. For this situation, we can consider artificial light filling, as well as strengthening the pruning of the whole branch to avoid closed stems and leaves and poor light.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="20" > third, water and fertilizer reasons</h1>
The two points that need to be paid attention to here are excessive water and partial nitrogen fertilizer. Too much water or too much watering and too much nitrogen fertilizer application will promote the physiological growth of watermelon, that is, the growth of branches, stems and leaves. The growth of branches, stems and leaves will compete with the fruit for nutrients, so that the supply of nutrients in the fruit is insufficient and the hollow melon is formed. Therefore, we must apply fertilizer scientifically, pay attention to the reasonable combination of nutrition, and use compound fertilizer + high potassium fertilizer + sugar alcohol calcium for drip irrigation in the puffing stage to ensure the expanded nutritional needs of watermelon. Of course, severe water shortage is not enough, especially in the expansion period, water shortage will lead to melon cells can not be fully expanded and form hollow. Melon fields with severe water shortage during the expansion stage of watermelon pollination should be filled in time to prevent dehydration from forming hollows and avoid hormone spraying.

Before the watermelon ripens, the nutrients and water absorbed by the roots and synthesized by themselves are transported from the bottom up to the fruit for growth. However, after the fruit is ripe, if the harvest is not timely, the nutrients and water will be transported from the fruit back to the branches and leaves, and the fruit will form a hollow due to the loss of water and nutrients. This phenomenon is more pronounced in varieties with fast fruit development. Therefore, it is necessary to harvest melons early in a timely manner, especially for varieties of sand that are prone to hollowing and grafted watermelons, it is necessary to harvest melons appropriately and early.

Different watermelon varieties are also different due to their own genetic characteristics, and the probability of being prone to hollowing out is also different. For example, varieties such as Heimi No. 2, Xinong No. 8, Xiaolan, Mihong, Jingxin No. 1 and other varieties are not easy to form hollow fruits, while some early ripening watermelon varieties frequently occur hollow phenomenon, especially in the late cultivation time. It is best to choose small and medium-sized fruit varieties for early cultivation of watermelon in greenhouses, such as small orchid, special small phoenix, early spring carnelian and so on.
