Peter Mayer is best known for his travel essay A Year in Provence, published in 1989, documenting his life from England to France. He also wrote the novel A Good Year, a film of the same name, released in 2006 and starring Russell Crowe and Marion Godia.

In an interview with The Guardian 20 years ago, Mayer explained how he had bonded with Provence, when he was working on a novel.

"I found myself completely distracted, I was so intoxicated by the curious life of Provence that I was not bothered to write novels. The education I received every day from the plumber, from the farmer next door, from the mushroom picker, and from the woman who raised the little donkey was far more fascinating than anything I had invented myself. He said.

Although the response to A Year in Provence was modest when it was published, it later became one of the most successful travel literature of all time, selling more than six million copies worldwide.
