The legend of the gourmet Lai Tangyuan

Oriental Shuo and lantern girl

This legend is related to the custom of eating lanterns: according to legend, Emperor Wu of Han had a favorite courtier named Dongfang Shuo, who was kind and funny. One winter, after a few days of heavy snowfall, Dongfang Shuo went to the Imperial Garden to fold plum blossoms for Emperor Wu. As soon as I entered the garden gate, I found that there was a palace girl in tears and ready to throw herself into the well. Dongfang Shuo rushed to the rescue and asked her why she was going to commit suicide. It turned out that this palace girl's name was Lantern, and there were parents and a younger sister in the family. Since she entered the palace, she has never had the opportunity to see her family again. Every year, when spring comes, I miss my family more than usual.

I feel that I can't fulfill my filial piety in front of my parents, so it is better to die. Dongfang Shuo heard what had happened to her, felt deep sympathy, and assured her that he would try to reunite her with her family. One day, the Oriental Shuo Palace set up a divination stall on Chang'an Avenue. Many people rushed to ask him for divination. Unexpectedly, everyone's account and request was the signature of "the sixteenth day of the first month to burn the body". Suddenly, there was a great panic in Chang'an. People are asking for solutions to the disaster. Dongfang Shuo said, "On the evening of the thirteenth day of the first month, the Vulcan Emperor will send a red-clothed goddess to visit, and she is the messenger who is ordered to burn Chang'an, and I will give you the copied words, so that the current son can think of a way." After saying that, he threw down a red post and flew away. The common people picked up the red poster and hurriedly sent it to the palace to report to the emperor. Emperor Wudi of Han took a look at it, only to see that it read: "Chang'an is robbing, burning emperor Que, fifteen days of fire, flaming red supper night", he was shocked in his heart, and quickly invited the resourceful Dongfang Shuo. Dongfang Shuo thought about it for a moment and said, "I heard that the Vulcan King loves to eat tangyuan the most, and doesn't the Lantern in the palace often make you tangyuan?" Fifteen nights can let the Lantern make tangyuan. Long live incense offerings, order kyoto families to make tangyuan, and worship the fire god Jun.

Then he instructed his subjects to hang up lights together on the fifteenth night, and light firecrackers and set off fireworks all over the city, as if there were fire all over the city, so that they could hide from the Jade Emperor. In addition, the people outside the city were informed to enter the city at night to watch the lanterns and eliminate disasters and solve problems in the crowd." When Emperor Wu heard this, he was very happy and passed on the instructions to do as Dongfang Shuo did. On the fifteenth day of the first month, chang'an city was illuminated with lights, and tourists were bustling and bustling. The parents of the palace maid Lantern also took their sister into the city to watch the lanterns. When they saw the Omiya lamp with the word "Lantern" written on it, they shouted in surprise: "Lantern! Lantern Festival! Lantern heard the shouts and was finally reunited with his relatives at home. After such a lively night, Chang'an City was indeed safe and sound. Emperor Wu of Han was overjoyed, so he ordered that every fifteenth day of the first month he would make tangyuan for the Fire God King, and on the fifteenth day of the first month, the whole city would still hang up lights and set off fireworks. Because the tangyuan made by the Lantern is the best, people call the Tangyuan Lantern, and this day is called the Lantern Festival.
