Ye Dehui's last five years in Changsha

Ye Dehui (1864-1927), also known as Huan Bin , Zhishan , No. 1 Wuyuan , Hunan Xiangtan people , ancestral home of Suzhou Wu County , later moved to Hunan. After the Great Revolution, he was executed for opposing the Penghu Reform Law, serving as president of the Hunan Branch of the Preparatory Committee during Yuan Shikai's contemplation of restoring the imperial system, and advocating that Zhao Hengti accept the appointment of the Beijing government. As a celebrity in the late Qing Dynasty, Ye Dehui was well-known in hunan cultural, educational, and business circles, and also had considerable influence in the political and military circles, but after the founding of the Republic of China, the "gentry power" was greatly reduced, and Ye Dehui, as an old-school figure, inevitably had the anxiety of being marginalized. He tried several times to return to the social center, but all failed. Finally, in the five years afterglow of the sunset, the great social unrest came unexpectedly, and the intellectual, who was intertwined with reputations, lost his life and completed the tragic curtain.

Nosy Mr. Ye Da

Since the Restoration and Reform Movement, facing several life-threatening risks, Ye Dehui is still arrogant, arrogant, unabashed, informal, and "nosy and sloppy." On August 13, 1912, Hunan's "Ta Kung Pao" published a small news: Ye Huanbin actually protected the smoker Yayo? It turned out that the Changsha County Bureau sent soldiers from Pozi Street to Zhizhong and the boss Zheng's family to confiscate a lot of opium pills, Ye Dehui came forward on bail, and then wrote to the county bureau questioning the rationality of law enforcement, so the newspaper rebuked Ye Dehui for protecting the smokers. As the street director of Pozi Street in Changsha Commercial Center, Ye Dehui was called "Mr. Ye Da" by the neighbors, and whenever there was a problem, he entrusted "Mr. Ye Da" to come forward. Ye Dehui was very flattered by this.

Ye Dehui also took care of too many chores. A new man named Li Songpu moved from the countryside, and the beggars begged for money in droves, losing thousands of dollars. At night, there was also extortion by the goons, and the neighboring weaving shops and inspectors deliberately pointed out the knocks on the door. Ye Dehui sent a letter to the governor of Changsha County, Cao, asking the police force to investigate, especially the neighbors who warned the tiger. Ye Dehui hated the evil deeds of betraying his neighbors and did not hesitate to use personal relations to strictly intervene, on the one hand, to maintain the sense of traditional social morality of justice, and on the other hand, to attach importance to the rules of the neighborhood market. In addition, many wooden factories were opened in Changsha, and Ye Dehui asked the authorities to intervene and relocate them all outside the city; some goons carried abandoned babies along the streets to beg house by house, and Ye Dehui wrote to the Changsha County Bureau demanding severe punishment. The former is for the living environment of the public, and the latter is related to social order and human rights. From this point of view, Ye Dehui's nosy love is not unreasonable, and none of them are simply for their own profits, but only touch the interests of others and be disliked.

In order to facilitate nosy affairs, Ye Dehui once tried to seek a social platform. In November 12, the vice president of the Changsha General Chamber of Commerce, Yang Xingquan, resigned (the president has long been vacant), the General Chamber of Commerce was not functioning well for a while, and the government ordered an immediate re-election. The General Chamber of Commerce is a social organization with some management functions and has always been concerned by all sectors of society. It was once rumored that Ye Dehui was about to be elected president.

In fact, Ye Dehui also made a lot of preparations. According to the law of the Chamber of Commerce at that time, the by-election of the president should be elected among the directors of the Chamber of Commerce. Ye Dehui was not a director, nor was he a member, and it just so happened that Sun Xuechu of Yifengxiang, the next director of the Huai Shang Association, applied for resignation, and the Huai Shang Association immediately held a meeting to elect Ye Dehui as the director, and sent an official letter note to the General Chamber of Commerce. Ye Dehui has a high reputation in the intellectual and business circles, rich contacts and resources, is familiar with the laws of business, has the courage and ability to negotiate with the government, and is the ideal candidate for the president of the Chamber of Commerce. However, under the operation of the opponent, the situation soon changed.

Sun Xuechu, who had resigned, suddenly rebelled, declaring that his previous resignation had been comforted, and even if he resigned, he should be replaced by the director of the Huaishang Alternate Association, and clearly opposed the by-election of Ye Dehui as the director. The letter from Yi Fengxiang and the official letter of the Huai Merchants Association are obviously contradictory, and it is clear which is first and which is lighter and which is heavier, but the Chamber of Commerce has adopted a delaying strategy, and has not expressed its position, and it is necessary to wait for the meeting to determine Ye Dehui's qualifications as a director. Some people immediately accused someone in the newspaper of not naming names but running the head of the chamber of commerce, and the clear-eyed people knew at a glance that they were coming for Ye Dehui. A few days later, the election began in an atmosphere that was clearly unfavorable to Ye Dehui. The election results were announced, and 54 voters, Huang Zaoqi won 37 votes to be elected as the president, and Ye Dehui received 13 votes as president. Despite the deliberate sabotage, Ye Dehui received a lot of votes, which is still comforting. However, soon, the Chamber of Commerce General Assembly determined that Ye Dehui's membership as a director was invalid, completely cutting off Ye Dehui's possibility of participating in the Chamber of Commerce.

Although Ye Dehui does not discriminate against business, a well-known intellectual has laid down his life to participate in the competition for chamber of commerce president. It is conceivable that Ye Dehui participated in the complex mentality of the chamber of commerce president competition. With the promulgation of the provincial constitution, associations have appeared and played an increasingly important role, Ye Dehui naturally saw this trend; since losing the platform of the provincial education president, returning to Changsha after many years of residence in Suzhou and Shanghai, Ye Dehui felt alienated by society, and Ye Dehui, who had spent his years, was inevitably anxious; the head of the competition chamber of commerce reflected Ye Dehui's intention to try to use the platform to find the right to speak, and the high level of intellectuals made it impossible for him to compete by any means.

In February of the following year, Wang Shizhen, Sun Baoqi and others set up the National Association for Peaceful Reunification in Beijing, and Ye Dehui immediately set up a branch in Hunan. Governor Zhao Hengti and Commander of the Second Division Liu Yong were elected as honorary directors, and Ye Dehui, Yang Haozi, and Yang Shugu were elected as directors. However, soon after the news came, Sun Baoqi stopped doing it, because Cao Kun did not agree, and the Hunan Branch of the National Association for Peaceful Reunification naturally died without a problem.

The storm of "constitutional destruction" surging among the masses

On the New Year's Day of the 11th year of the Republic of China, the Constitution of Hunan Province was promulgated and implemented, after which Zhao Hengti was elected as the governor of the province, followed by the election of seven directors of internal affairs, finance, education, industry, justice, negotiation, and military affairs. The provincial constitution promulgated by Hunan for the first time in the country is a democratic achievement valued by enlightened people, and it is also related to the interests of provincial legislators. However, Hunan autonomy is obviously not conducive to the unification of the whole country, so there have been persistent calls to amend the Constitution or abolish the Constitution. The Beiyang government sent people to the campaign one after another to spread rumors of the abolition of the Constitution, and for a while the people of the provincial council were panicked and sent a letter to the provincial council to "express a clear statement within three days." At this time, Ye Dehui wrote three letters to Zhang Taiyan, who supported Hunan autonomy, discussing the abolition of the Constitution, and published them in large quantities, and various influences were superimposed, making Ye Dehui the target of public criticism.

The provincial council met several times, and the crowd was fierce, and within a few days, the two speeches held that Ye Dehui "had a perverse wording, and there was no difference in plotting to betray the provincial constitution" and that "destroying the constitution with words will definitely destroy the constitution by force, especially if it is destroyed by force," he urged the provincial council to order it to be taken. Speaker Ouyang Zhensheng twice called to urge the Department of Internal Affairs and the National Police Department to question, which can be said to have spared no effort. Since then, there have been petitions signed by Peng Qingquan to abolish the constitution, and Hunan academic circles signed by Zhou Dakun, Deng Nanjie, etc. have petitioned to amend the provincial constitution, which in the eyes of provincial councilors is a related reaction, which has aggravated anxiety and anxiety. However, Ye Dehui, who was ignorant of current affairs and had the audacity to do so, actually wrote to the provincial council:

Yesterday, various newspapers and your association passed the case, and for the contemptible people and friends on the provincial constitution, thinking that it was undermining the provincial constitution, the provincial bureau submitted a letter to the contemptible person to take care of it. Public and other legal persons should not have such illegal acts. Freedom of expression, the law of the country and the provincial constitution contain the same regulations. If the kings are law-abiding, they should be rebuked by the law. If the department is lecturing, it should be discussed in words. Contemptible people are not administrators, and they are not afraid of your impeachment. Non-Ta Kung Pao, do not fear your will be banned. Xiang affairs have their own secrets, and what the contemptible people say is still loyal. Don't disturb yourself. Zunbu.

Tribute to the old prayers.

Ye Dehui is white

Ye Dehui single-handedly confronted the powerful organs, breathing calmly, fearlessly, and justified. "Freedom of speech" is a civil right expressly stipulated in the Law of the Republic of China and the Provincial Constitution, and it is naturally reasonable and legal to discuss the Provincial Constitution. Provincial councillors are elected according to law, and their words and deeds contradict themselves and do not match their identity, which is obviously illegal. If legal responsibility is to be pursued, it must be investigated according to law, and if discussion and learning are carried out in words, it should not be used by force. "Contemptible people are not administrators, and they are not afraid of your impeachment." Non-Ta Kung Pao, do not fear your will be banned. "It's the truth." Xiang affairs have their own secrets, and what the contemptible people say is still loyal. Don't disturb yourself. These words are more content and have a warning meaning. Zeng Yi, a member of the provincial council, was indignant and angry: Why did the government not take charge of the meeting, and why did it not take charge of it, so that it teased the association, and the government should be responsible. Rudely reprimanded Ye Dehui for not being a Xiang person, having no concept of loving the province, deliberately destroying the Constitution for the sake of the remnants of the imperial system, and was inferior in both demeanor and reasoning.

The provincial government finally issued an order to take care of Ye Dehui in accordance with the wishes of the provincial council. However, it is not over. On the one hand, the organs of power deployed to take charge of Ye Dehui; on the other hand, Ye Dehui hosted a banquet at home, inviting Fu Dingyi, Ge Yinglong, and Tan Daonan, and inviting Tang Chengxu, director of the Industrial Department, and Liu Wu, director of the Police Department, to accompany him. The next day, Hunan's "Ta Kung Pao" reported in large bold: Ye Dehui invited guests to a banquet yesterday. On the third day, the provincial council was full of emotion, believing that the guests of Ye Dehui's banquet were deliberately flouting the provincial council, which was extremely hateful. Tang Chengxu, director of the Industrial Department, and Liu Wu, director of the Police Department, went to the banquet, but they were very incompatible and had to be severely questioned. The report only said that they were invited to the banquet, and Tang and Liu immediately explained that they received the invitation but did not attend. The Ta Kung Pao also hurried to publish the news: the chief of police took a leave of absence due to illness and did not attend Ye Dehui's banquet. Provincial Councilor Zhu Yingqi believes that the government's preferential tolerance for those who destroy the constitution is tantamount to deliberately surrendering to the Beiyang government. Provincial councilor Shi Zhenxiang advocated direct prosecution to the Supreme People's Procuratorate and the punishment of civil unrespons. Provincial councilor Chen Xiaoyuan believes that Ye Dehui's vicious words have destroyed the Constitution, and he has heard that there are people in the background, and if the government does not take charge of it, it will raise an impeachment case. At the urging of the Deputies, Ouyang Zhensheng once again called the governor on the spot to ask questions.

Seeing that Ye Dehui was about to go to jail or start his fifth escape, the death of Ye Dehui's mother, Madame Matthew, changed the situation. Mrs. Matthew was 86 years old, and the day after the official document of Ye Dehui was issued, she suddenly and without warning died without warning. When his mother died, the deceased was the eldest, and there was no reason for Filial Piety to escape, and the authorities could not arrest Filial Piety against the norm, and the provincial councillors did not ask questions for the same reason.

Thirty-seven days later, Mrs. Matthew came out of the funeral, the scene was very lively, and the Hunan "Ta Kung Pao" specially sent a message. Dignitaries from all walks of life in the provincial capital were escorted by the machine gun company of the Second Division and the guards of the Third Division. Thousands of mourners were sent by men and women, and roads were blocked. Wu Peifu also sent wreaths. This is a concentrated demonstration of Ye Dehui's connections and strength, perhaps because of the influence of someone in the guest, the trouble of the "constitution-breaking" storm will no longer appear. Ye Dehui is not the only person who advocates the revision and abolition of the Constitution, and others, such as the former Qing jinshi Peng Qingquan, etc., but the parliamentarians only aimed their spearhead at Ye Dehui, which is naturally related to Ye Dehui's social influence and personality style.

Ye Dehui's last five years in Changsha

The Pozi Street, which was mobilized by the masses, was forcibly demolished

Pozi Street was the most prosperous commercial area in Changsha at that time, and with the development of the city, the streets were blocked by more than one inch wide. Previously, Huang Xing's son Huang Yiou served as the prime minister of the Changsha Municipal Office, that is, he intended to demolish the street, but the merchants opposed it. After Zhao Hengti was elected governor, he was determined to widen the streets to facilitate traffic and commerce, and appointed Liu Wu, director of the provincial capital police department, and Cao Dianqiu, premier of the Changsha Municipal Public Office, to form a street sorting committee. Tang Qianyi plans to raise public bonds and issue prize securities, open the old Governor's Office as a park, and set up new worlds and amusement parks in Beijing and other places to raise funds for the new market. The committee determined that each house should give way to the size, first remove the wooden seat plate, not enough to give way to the storefront. Usually more than ten days in advance, if the construction is not started within the time limit, the engineering team and armed police will forcibly demolish. The materials and the mason's wages are the responsibility of the merchant, and there is no compensation except for a few stores that are too occupied to be used and purchased by the municipal office. The Provincial Department of Finance only allocated 10,000 yuan, Tang Qianyi's commercial operation plan was too late to be carried out, and the members of the street sorting committee did not have the strength to compensate. Therefore, it is obviously a gratuitous and brutal forced demolition.

Large-scale centralized demolition has brought many problems. Business operations were interrupted, revenues fell, and complaints were rife. The price of wood, ash, bricks and tiles has risen, and the mud and wood shop has taken the opportunity to ask for a large increase in the price, and the daily ocean five corners are willing to start. "Poor households are self-sufficient, and once they are demolished, they will go bankrupt and die, and there is no way to survive." Huang Mingzhen, the owner of the meat shop in Zoumaloukou, used the "Article 7 of the Constitution" as a weapon to publicly declare his opposition to the demolition. Institutions in Hunan provinces, such as the Commercial Press and the Shaanxi-Gansu Association, have repeatedly written letters requesting exemption from demolition and demolition. During the construction, especially when the demolition was forced, the streets were closed, the traffic was not smooth, the dust was full of dust, and the residents suffered greatly. There are also construction casualties, wrong arrests and infringements, etc., and there are many problems.

The street committee lacked overall planning, lack of experience, and internal differences of opinion in advance, and Zhao Hengti directly intervened, which made the work more difficult. Previously, Duanlu Street was demolished according to the width of the street and seven feet, so the merchants of Pozi Street demanded to be implemented according to the comparison, but Zhao Hengti had to implement it according to the width of the street, and resolutely did not compromise. The tidying up street committee did not announce the standards to the society in advance, acted hastily, promised to consider the demands of the merchants in the middle, and finally could only rebel, sandwiched between the governor and the merchants. Cao Dianqiu, the prime minister of the Changsha Municipal Office, had objections to the width and progress of the street, and suffered from internal contradictions, and once resigned due to illness. "Municipal governments always take the convenience of transportation as an urgent task, and the people's livelihood and suffering must not be taken into account." Now, in addition to the old cloth and the new, it is the only way to raise funds for charity and open up new cities. "The perception is reasonable and representative.

Ye Dehui, as the total value of Pozi Street and a social celebrity, the merchants have placed great expectations on them. At that time, Mrs. Matthew had just died, and he could not come forward at all, but due to the promotion of the merchants and the courage to do things, he finally came to the front desk. Ye Dehui does not live in Pozi Street, nor does the property involve the demolition, and the representation is not for personal gain. Therefore, the merchants gathered at the Pozi Street Fire Palace for a meeting and entrusted Ye Dehui to negotiate. Ye Dehui explicitly opposed the inconsistent decisions of the authorities, and even more opposed the forced demolition.

In view of Ye Dehui's attitude, the members of the Street Sorting Committee temporarily stopped the forced demolition operation, and Tang Qianyi personally went to the door to do Ye Dehui's work. Ye Dehui did not want to meet, but Tang Qianyi sincerely came to the door, so there was a meeting in a good atmosphere but no agreement was reached. Tang Qianyi also personally visited the venue of the Chamber of Commerce to give speeches and explanations to the merchants, intending to negotiate between the merchants and the governor. Tang Qianyi's attitude and methods are worthy of affirmation, but they have not achieved the purpose of resolving contradictions.

After that, Ye Dehui wrote a letter to the Police Department and copied it to Zhao Hengti at the same time. A few days later, he wrote another letter to Zhao Hengti. The main contents of the two letters: First, the Police Department originally agreed with me, only to remove the seat plate, and not to expand the content of the street. According to the regulations of the Chinese and foreign police, only the construction of new public facilities can be demolished, and there is no reason to dismantle the seat plate without reason. Most of the merchants protested, and after my repeated persuasion, they reluctantly agreed. Second, the dispatch of troops to force demolition, the construction of civil engineering, the suspension of merchant transactions, but also to bear materials and wages, the loss is very large, complaining. Third, I am not against demolition and recognition of the long-term interests of widening the streets, but the government is too radical, and the merchants "benefit from dreams, and harm in the skin." Fourth, a certain bureau chief did not understand the reality of Changsha, but only copied Guangzhou's practices, and came up with the idea of inviting people to complain, "the advocate is at ease outside, and the person in charge is a complaining government." V. When Tan Yanmin demolished the shops under the wall of the Police Department, although it was a public land, it was also compensated according to value, but today's private property is forcibly demolished without compensation, which is obviously unreasonable. Sixth, before the Dragon Boat Festival this year, the government asked the Chamber of Commerce to borrow money to tide over the difficulties, all walks of life rebelled, the head of the Chamber of Commerce hid in the countryside, and I came forward to borrow 180,000 yuan from Huaishang. While I cannot assert my credit, the Government should recognize its faults. Seventh, Tang Qianyi has both the two major functions and powers of the police department and the municipal government, and can also mobilize the army, and the power is excessively concentrated and does not conform to the rules. Although Ye Dehui maintained his courtesy, he did not hesitate because of the other party's status as a provincial governor, spoke bluntly, did not compliment, did not cover up, did not tact, and did not shy away from praising Zhao Hengti's political enemies. Finally, the admonition: "The government recalls the painful situation of the merchants and homeowners last year, and leaves the autumn festival to borrow money from the merchants, so as to ease this unhurried food, and Xu Tu will change the direction." The scholar is the prince of Tan Weigong, and the grandson of the new Guangdong who has no learning. Then those who love your excellency are the ones who love Sangzi. Ye Dehui also mentioned the dereliction of duty of the parliament: "The name of Xiang Province is autonomy, and the provincial assembly is still desperately trying to preserve the provincial constitution, so why is it silent and still waits for the appeal of the brother?" ”

Zhao Hengti did not reply to Ye Dehui, but immediately showed a very strict order, and sent people to carry this order to publicize in the streets of the whole city: "Illuminating the streets was originally to facilitate transportation and promote civilized municipal administration, with the intention of trade and benefiting workers." There are class lepers who visit and hear about it, spread rumors everywhere, secretly form leaflets, and try to sabotage the full work. The genus is unclear. Severe penalties are imposed upon detection. On all kinds of people, etc., be careful not to blindly follow yourself. Ye Dehui xiang has the name of "leper", and the merchants of Pozi Street have also met many times to discuss the strike to protest, so the direction of the order is very clear. The letters were no longer returned, contrary to the traditional etiquette of scholars, Ye Dehui naturally felt bored, and since then he has not said a word about the demolition of Pozi Street, and there has been no correspondence with Zhao Hengti. In fact, more than a year later, the Street Consolidation Committee stopped functioning, and the street demolition movement also came to an end.

Provincial City Celebrity Selection

In October 13, the Hunan "Ta Kung Pao" launched the "Provincial City 100 Celebrities" selection activity, similar to today's draft activities, but the novelty and impact brought by it are not the same. The reporters preliminarily selected a hundred people from the provincial capital and published them in the newspaper, and the current officials, soldiers, and parliamentarians did not participate in the selection. And ask readers for papers on the following questions: (1) How many dozens of people have known the names of this hundred people? (ii) Who among these hundred people is not well known? (3) Which one of these hundred people thinks is the most famous? (4) Who among these 100 people are considered unqualified?

Ye Dehui has had smallpox, and the nickname Ye Mazi is more influential in the city than the correct name, and this time he also entered the celebrity list with Ye Mazi. The characters included together are from the three religions and nine streams, but each is representative. For example, in the art world, there are Wang Yunchang, Yan Fuqiu, Li Zhiyun, Tang Fulian, etc., Wang Yunchang is a famous calligrapher, it is said that the annual income from selling words is three or four thousand silver dollars; Yan Fuqiu, Li Zhiyun, and Tang Fulian are all famous characters of Xiang opera. In the educational circles, there are Hu Zijing, Tang Qunying, Xu Teli, etc. Hu Zijing grinds blood to run schools, and the Mingde School is famous throughout the country; Tang Qunying is a young woman who is a young woman and is running a girls' school in Changsha; Xu Teli has just returned from work-study in France and served as the principal of Changsha Normal School. There were former Qing dynasty elders and magnates, such as Zeng Chongbo, Peng Qingquan, Xiao Rongjue, Wu Yanzhou and so on. After the founding fathers of the Republic of China, such as Huang Yi'ou, son of Huang Xing, and Tang Python, son of Tang Caichang, and so on. There were emerging professional lawyers at that time, such as barrister Pei Yunxin. Yan Fuqing and Hu Mei, who have foreign-related backgrounds, Hu Mei and Yan Fuqing have successively served as the presidents of Xiangya Medical College. There are business representatives, such as Huang Zaoqi, president of the Changsha General Chamber of Commerce, Song Kasaxian, former president, and Li Yinqiao and Xiao Laisheng, the directors of the association. There are inferior occupations such as cooks, such as Liu Cook, Xiao Cook, etc. There are religious figures, such as Haiyin monks and monks, haiyin monks are famous poet monks and serve as abbots of Kaifu Temple. There are also beggars, fortune tellers, prostitutes, etc., such as Deng Madman, whose real name is Deng Youmi, Wang Minyun's son-in-law, Deng Mizhi's son, who had a literary name in his early years, but fell into the streets to write poems and beg, often making people watch the hilarity; Zhou Ya, who was often recommended by celebrities as "Shen Xiang", was suspected of fraud and was detained. This is indeed a representative and interesting celebrity list, comparatively speaking, Ye Dehui is a famous person in the upper class and in the city.

After the release of the 100 celebrity list in the provincial city, readers have come to discuss it. For item (2), no one mentions Ye Mazi, that is, they have all heard of Ye Mazi's name, and their popularity is relatively high. For item (4), no one mentions Ye Mazi, indicating that no one does not recognize Ye Mazi's celebrity status.

A hundred people from the provincial city were evaluated, which improved Ye Dehui's reputation, and the media also changed the tendency to ridicule, watch hilarity, and voyeurism. But from beginning to end, Ye Dehui did not say a word, ignored or laughed secretly, and did not know.

Soon, Ye Dehui went to Changde to wish Tang Rongyang a birthday for the town guard, and the Hunan Ta Kung Pao reported and published a shou lian written by Ye Dehui, which was considered to be relevant to the situation and quite elegant. Famous reporter Li Baoyi sighed: Zeng Chongbo, Ye Dehuijun, and the miscellaneous columns are respected as celebrities in Changsha, celebrities spit on their belongings, and Huang Dianli is extraordinary in the end. The following year, a spring famine occurred in Hunan, Ye Dehui followed his mother's will, donated two hundred yuan, and newspapers rarely used the title of "Ye Jundehui", on the one hand, it was a good thing, on the other hand, it was an improvement in the attitude of the media.

Since then, Ye Dehui's social activities have decreased significantly. More than a year later, he was executed by a special court authorized by the Kuomintang Hunan Provincial Party Department. Why didn't Ye Dehui flee as before? It is said that The commander-in-chief of the Northern Expedition, Chiang Kai-shek, introduced Tan Yanmin, invited Ye Dehui to a banquet in Changsha and gave him a photo of the inscription "Dao Gao Long Hu Fu, De Zhong Ghost God Qin", and then contacted Ye Dehui's interaction with Tang Shengzhi, which should be the main reason for not leaving.
