At about 1:00 a.m., the "Jiyuan" ship arrived in Lushun, and Fang Boqian reported on the situation of the battle, reporting that the bow of the "Jiyuan" ship was cracking and leaking, the guns could not be fired, sailed back for repairs, and the remaining ships were still engaged. Four hours later, Ding Ruchang led the Beiyang Fleet back to Lushun.

On the same day, Li Hongzhang sent telegrams to the Military Aircraft Department and the General Administration, saying that he had received a telegram from Ding Ruchang, and that he had learned that the Beiyang Navy had sunk in "Zhiyuan", that a fire had broken out in "Jingyuan", that "Chao Yong" or "Yang Wei" had caught fire, that one had sailed near the mountain, that there was no distinction in the smoke, and that three Japanese ships had been sunk.
