At the age of 15, he went to work as a child laborer at the Yumen Oil Mine. In September 1958, he led the 1205 drilling team to set the latest record of 5009 meters per month; in 1959, he set the latest national record of 71,000 meters drilled per year. In April 1970, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer and died in November of the same year at the age of 47. "I'd rather live twenty years less and desperately want to win the big oil fields."
