Why study Chinese well in Singapore? Lee Kuan Yew had already prophesied

In 1979, Lee Kuan Yew began a vigorous Mandarin campaign in Singapore, and he introduced the benefits of learning Mandarin on many occasions, hoping that Singaporeans would use less (not "give up") Cantonese, Hokkien dialects, Hokkien and other dialects.

Why did he do that? In a speech, Lee Kuan Yew said in Hokkien: "In another 20 years, if China completes their 'four modernizations,' its trade volume will become quite large." Speaking Mandarin (Mandarin) is very convenient at that time, but it is impossible to communicate with Hokkien. So [learning, using Mandarin] will be very good for us culturally and very good for us economically. In addition to this, Lee Kuan Yew also hopes to unite the Chinese people of different origins through Mandarin, a common Chinese language. These are the three great benefits of Mandarin that Lee Kuan Yew believes: economy, culture and unity.
