Thai botanists recently discovered a new plant species in a national park in Ranun Province on the southern Andaman coast, named Cute Star Flower. The paper on the discovery of the species was included in the British biological journal PeerJ (Plant Biology section) and, based on the location of its discovery in Ranun Province, Thailand, gave the scientific name Lasianthus ranongensis Sinbumroong & Napiroon.
The flowers of the plant are shaped like a star and flower from April to June every year. Because it is rare and grows only in specific areas, it is a relatively fragile plant species, so the researchers hope to increase the number of this species by using biotechnology. (Reporter Li Min)
