From October 19th to 20th, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, government and industry leaders, experts and scholars at home and abroad, deans of the School of Materials Science of sister universities, corporate guests, and alumni gathered together to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Donghua University and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the School of Materials Science and Engineering. At the celebration meeting on the morning of the 20th, the college signed strategic cooperation agreements with a number of enterprises, officially launched the Jiang Shicheng Special Fund and the Development Fund of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, issued certificates to some donors, and awarded Yu Mingfang Foundation Chair Professor, Aibo Fund Chair Professor, Outstanding Contribution Award, etc.
At the beginning of New China, the country's industry withered, and it became a top priority to solve the problem of "some people to wear and dress warmly". In 1954, Mr. Qian Baojun and Mr. Fang Bairong, the founders of the discipline, established the first chemical fiber major in New China. In 1985, the Department of Chemical Fiber Engineering was established, and in 1992, it was renamed the Department of Polymer Materials. In 1994, the School of Materials Science and Engineering was established, which is one of the earliest materials schools established in China.
The seven-rank years are like a song, and thirty are in full bloom. The School of Materials Science and Engineering of Donghua University has always aimed at the international frontier of science and technology, connected with major national needs, undertaken major national scientific research tasks, and continuously made technological breakthroughs in strategic materials and key fields such as viscose-based carbon fiber, high-strength and high-modulus polyethylene fiber, aromatic polyamide fiber, etc., striving to be the "leader" in the field of new materials and the "pioneer" in the cross-frontier field. The honorary title of advanced collective of the national education system has contributed to the construction of a fiber power in the mainland.

What is the impact of artificial intelligence on the development of materials science? How to embrace the new technology of artificial intelligence in the construction of materials discipline? At the National Symposium on the Construction of Materials Discipline held on October 19, experts, scholars and relevant persons in charge from domestic and foreign universities, research institutes, industry associations, and well-known artificial intelligence enterprises gathered in Donghua to discuss "Opportunities and Challenges for the Construction of Materials Discipline in the AI Era".
Looking back on the past, on the display wall of the historical evolution of the School of Materials, the longitudinal extension of the discipline development context is presented in front of you. From 1954, the first chemical fiber major in New China was established; After the reform and opening up, it has successively obtained the first batch of national key disciplines and doctoral degree awarding rights; In the new era, the discipline of "Materials Science and Engineering" was selected into the list of world-class disciplines and one of the top 1,000 disciplines in the world by ESI, and the State Key Laboratory of Fiber Materials Modification was awarded the "State Key Laboratory of Excellent Category" and was selected as the first batch of national modern industry colleges...... Generations of Donghua material people have walked out of an extraordinary development road with firm steps.
Professor Wang Yimin, a graduate of the class of 1974 and a member of the Materials Science and Engineering Group of the Fifth and Sixth Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, said with deep emotion, "Learning in Donghua and teaching in Donghua. More than half a century of study, work and life have made me deeply feel that the history of the development of a discipline is actually a history of struggle to pass on the torch and forge ahead."
After the unremitting efforts and struggle of several generations of material people, the college currently has a doctoral program in the first-level disciplines of "Materials Science and Engineering", "Chemistry" and "Nanoscience and Engineering", a doctoral program in "Energy and Power" engineering and a master's and doctoral degree in "Materials and Chemical Engineering" engineering, 12 national scientific research platforms such as the State Key Laboratory of Fiber Material Modification, and 9 provincial and ministerial key discipline support platforms such as the Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education of the Advanced Glass Manufacturing Technology Center, and has won 64 national, provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. It has always been at the forefront of material science research and innovation in mainland China.

At the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the materials discipline of Donghua University and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Peng Huisheng, a 1995 alumnus, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Fudan University, fondly recalled the unforgettable time of studying and living in Donghua.
As the cradle of the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents in the field of fiber materials, the college has always carried forward and inherited the "five love spirit", adhered to the "talent is the first resource", built a "six hundred" collaborative education system, and insisted on using the best resources in talent training. From version 1.0 to version 2.0, and then to the iterative upgrade of "1+1+1" (doctoral supervisor + youth tutor + administrative assistant), nearly 200 teachers, including subject leaders, senior professors, doctoral supervisors, national talent plans, etc., served as doctoral supervisors (assistant doctoral supervisors), covering nearly 4,000 students. Over the past 70 years, the college has built a first-class faculty team with personality charm and excellent teaching skills, which has become a solid force to promote the high-quality development of the college. At present, there are more than 60 national-level talents such as academicians, outstanding young people, and ten thousand people plan, and the teachers have successively won the Ho Liang Ho Li Award, the National Innovation Competition Award, the first batch of national university Huang Danian-style teacher teams, the national 38 red flag bearers and other honors, and led the construction of the "new generation of polymer materials research" Yangtze River Education Innovation Belt talent training and scientific and technological innovation cooperation, and was selected by the Ministry of Education in the strategic emerging field of the "14th Five-Year Plan" higher education textbook system construction team.

Over the years, the college has adhered to the advantages of disciplines and specialties, and actively contributed to the "Donghua Plan" to serve the national economy and people's livelihood, the upgrading and transformation of the chemical fiber industry, and solve the common problems of fiber materials.
