After his Ecovacs robot was hacked, Svensson filed a complaint with the manufacturer.

Later, Svensson received a phone call from Ecovacs and was told that the company had conducted a security investigation into the reported issues. The company representative told him via email: "Your Ecovacs account and its password have been obtained by unauthorized persons.

They also say that the company's technical team has identified the IP address of the criminals and disabled it to prevent further access.

In a subsequent email, they told him that "there is a high probability that your Ecovacs account has been affected by a 'credential stuffing' (this is when someone reuses the same username and password on multiple websites and the password combination is stolen in a separate cyberattack)".

In fact, as early as six months ago, security researchers tried to notify Ecovacs that their robot vacuum cleaners and applications had major security vulnerabilities.

The most serious problem is a defective Bluetooth connector that results in full access to the Ecovacs X2 from more than 100 meters away. In addition, there were problems with the PIN code system that protected the robot's video signal and remote control functions, and the warning sound played while the camera was being watched could be disabled from a distance.

But Svensson said he was not informed of the PIN problem in any of his communications with Ecovacs.

"I asked them if this had happened to other people as well. They just acted shocked – as if nothing had happened. ”

In the face of media skepticism, Ecovacs issued a statement on October 11, 2024:

Out of respect for consumer privacy, Ecovacs does not make public comments on individual consumer situations.

Ecovacs conducted a thorough internal investigation at the end of May 2024 and found no evidence that any usernames and passwords had been obtained by unauthorized third parties as a result of the compromised Ecovacs systems.

The investigation also uncovered a credential stuffing incident in which a third party attempted to access Ecovacs' customer account using an email address and password. The number of login attempts was significantly higher than the average daily login, with a ratio of 90:1. These attempts all came from the same IP address, which was identified as coming from an unusual device and an unusual location. As soon as the problem was discovered, this IP address was immediately blocked.

To keep consumers up to date and to emphasize the importance of changing security protocols, Ecovacs sent a reminder email to customers from May 31 to June 1 asking them to change their account passwords.

Ecovacs takes its responsibility for security and data very seriously, and in recent months, they have taken a number of steps, including improving the remote live video bypass PIN code issue, which is now resolved.
