On June 12, 1932, the Shanghai Declaration published a message, which caused a shock to the whole country. The news pointed out that the Los Angeles Olympic Preparation Committee accepted the registration of the "puppet Manchukuo" and will represent China in the Olympic Games. Another piece of news is that the puppet state of Manchukuo is holding an Olympic trials.

A few days later, news from Changchun pointed out that the puppet state of Manchukuo had decided to send two athletes, Yu Xiwei and Liu Changchun, led by the Japanese, to Los Angeles for the Olympic Games.

At that time, China's anti-Japanese sentiment was high, and Liu Changchun had already fled the northeast to Beiping shortly after the fall of the northeast in May. In May, he issued a statement in the Ta Kung Pao, stating that "I am a descendant of Huang Yan of the Chinese nation, a Chinese, and I will never represent The Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo in the Tenth Olympic Games."

Forced by the times, in order to maintain China's international status, the Chinese Olympic Games at that time believed that unless China selected athletes to participate in the Olympic Games, it could smash the Japanese conspiracy to support the puppet state of Manchukuo to replace China's status, so it decided to send athletes to register for the Olympic Games.

On June 25, 1932, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received information from the headquarters of the International Olympic Games that the puppet state of Manchukuo could not participate in the Olympic Games without the approval of the International Olympic Games, so it could not participate in the Games. The Los Angeles Olympic Preparatory Committee also issued a statement that the puppet state of Manchukuo participated in the Olympic Games this time, originally considering participating in the Olympic Games under the flags of the United States and The United Kingdom by referring to the precedents of the Philippines and India, but both of them were signed by statutory national Olympic organizations and recognized by the International Olympic Games. Puppet Manchukuo is not recognized by the International Olympic Federation, let alone a national sports organization and recognized by the International Olympic Games, and of course is not eligible to attend.

At that time, the Olympic Games registration had ended on June 18, the Chinese Olympic Games urgently called for accommodative registration, and on the 26th, the preparatory committee replied that the two players registered in China were Liu Changchun and Yu Xiwei.

Liu Changchun was arranged to be transferred to Shanghai for practice, but Yu Xiwei was already guarded by the Japanese at that time and could not leave the northeast, so Yu Xiwei failed to make the trip, and the only chinese participant in the Olympic Games for the first time was Liu Changchun.

Travel to the United States cost a lot of money, and at that time, the Ministry of Education decided not to send players to participate, and there was no financial support. Fortunately, General Zhang Xueliang, who was the president of Northeastern University at the time, came forward to fund about 8,000 silver yuan, about 1,500 US dollars, which was enough for needs. On July 1, Zhang Xueliang announced at the graduation ceremony of Northeastern University that Liu Changchun and Yu Xiwei were athletes and coaches Song Junfu of the Republic of China participating in the 10th Olympic Games.

After contacting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for assistance, Liu Changchun held a press conference in Shanghai on July 5, saying that he would do his best to serve the country. Hao Gengsheng, director of the Sports Association, who went all out to raise funds for Liu Changchun, pointed out at the meeting that Liu Changchun's participation in the Olympic Games is of far-reaching significance: First, it is necessary to eliminate the international propaganda conspiracy of the Japanese as a puppet manchukuo; second, to open up a new era for the Chinese sports circles to attend the Olympic Games, so that the blue sky and white sun flag of the Republic of China can fly on the Olympic field; third, to conspire with the youth sports circles of all countries in the world; fourth, to observe the sports technology and strength of the Olympic Games; and fifth, to take the opportunity to publicize Japan's evil deeds to young people all over the world.

On July 6 and 7, Shanghai's press, sports circles and groups celebrated For Liu Changchun, with nearly 2,000 people attending and a warm scene. On July 8, Liu Changchun and Song Junfu boarded a cruise ship from Shanghai to Los Angeles, USA, and launched the first voyage of the Chinese Olympic Games.

When the cruise ship passed through Kobe, a Japanese reporter boarded the ship to interview and asked Liu Changchun whether he was representing Manchukuo in the Olympic Games, and Liu Changchun immediately replied, "I am Chinese, of course, on behalf of the Republic of China." Soon after, the cruise ship postman sent a telegram, which was a telegram from the Japan Sports Association to the representatives of Manchukuo participating in the Olympic Games who won a great victory along the way, and Liu Changchun angrily replied, "There are only representatives of the Republic of China on board, not representatives of Manchukuo", and returned the telegram.

After a 21-day sea trip, the cruise ship arrived in Los Angeles on July 29 and was warmly welcomed by the preparatory committee personnel and overseas Chinese. The preparatory committee members opened the road in a police car and sent the two to the runners' village, where the opening ceremony will be held the next afternoon.

On the day of the opening ceremony, Liu Changchun held the national flag, and the people who walked around the scene were Song Junfu and Shen Siliang, as well as Liu Xuesong, Shen Guoquan, and Tuo Ping, who were temporarily recruited in Los Angeles, and the overseas Chinese and YMCA officers were gathered to gather the number of people, so as not to be too lonely. This was the beginning of China's first Olympic participation.

Liu Changchun was floating at sea for 3 weeks, and his physical strength had long been greatly affected, so he originally registered for 3 projects, he only participated in 100 meters and 200 meters, and 400 meters did not play due to physical weakness. The two events participated in, both of which were last in the group, failed to qualify.

After the competition, Liu Changchun was unable to return to China due to insufficient travel expenses, and later returned to China with the donation of local overseas Chinese.

In 1933, at the 5th National Games, Liu Changchun won the championship with two national records of 100 meters and 200 meters with a time of 10.7 seconds and 22.0 seconds. The 100-meter record of 10.7 seconds remained for 25 years until it was broken by new Chinese athlete Liang Jianxun in 1958.

In 1936, Liu Changchun represented China for the second time and participated in the 11th Olympic Games, but also failed to achieve good results due to the bumps of the 28-day waves and the greater physical exertion.

Coaching career

Since the 1930s, Liu Changchun has served as a physical education assistant, lecturer and associate professor at Northeastern University, Beijing Normal University and Northeast Chung Cheng University. His major works include "Athletics Guidance Law" and "Athletics Adjudication Law". From August 1948 to February 1949, he was an associate professor at the Department of Physical Education of Beijing Dongda University. From March 1949 to August 1950, he was an associate professor at Changchun Normal University. From August 1950 to March 1983, he was a professor at Dalian Institute of Technology (now Dalian University of Technology, and there is still a bronze statue of Liu Changchun in The University of Technology).

On March 21, 1983, Liu Changchun died at the age of 74.
