Approved! A new building will be built in the new metro area of Sydney's Olympic Park, which is expected to add nearly 500 units

Nearly 500 new homes will be built in the new metro area of Sydney Olympic Park, and the main construction project will officially commence after approval from the NSW government.

According to The Telegraph, planning authorities have approved the construction of three 21- to 45-storey buildings around Sydney's Olympic Park MRT station to house the first 300 residential units, along with a range of commercial and retail buildings.

Following the approval of the first homes, Sydney Metro plans to revise the development to add an additional 190 homes.

The area around the station will also be part of the government's transit-oriented development plan, which will automatically rezone land within 400 metres of the station to allow for the construction of up to six storeys.

The Minns government expects this to add up to 16,100 homes to the area. At the same time, two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) finally arrived at the Olympic Park Underground Station in Sydney.

It took two machines, affectionately named Beatrice and Daphne, 18 months to excavate two 11-kilometre tunnels from The Bays to reach the new area.

The new tube station will form part of the NSW Government's $25 billion Metro West rail line, which will run from Hunter Street in the city through Rozelle and Sydney Olympic Park to Parramatta and Westmead.

More than 2 million tonnes of material have been excavated from the two TBMs, enough to fill 316 Olympic-sized swimming pools, and nearly 72,500 tunnel segments will be installed on the tunnel walls.

The TBM will be demolished, and construction of a 200-metre-long and 27-metre-deep metro station is expected to begin in 2027. Meanwhile, the tender process for developers for the development above Hunter Street Station in Sydney's CBD has also begun.

Construction plans for Parramatta and Pyrmont stations are currently under review, while plans for a possible new station at Rosehill Racecourse are still unconfirmed.

The development of Rosehill Station is contingent on whether members of the Australian Jockey Club will vote in favour of selling its track to the Government later this year.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the new district was vital to providing more homes close to public transport hubs.
