At 23:59 on December 18, 2023, a sudden 6.2 magnitude earthquake swept through the city, and many residents were still asleep. The maximum intensity of the earthquake was 8 degrees, and as of 8 o'clock on December 20, a total of 423 aftershocks were recorded, causing 772,000 people in Gansu and Qinghai provinces to be affected to varying degrees.
The Jishishan County Fire and Rescue Brigade, located at the center of the earthquake, was the first rescue team to arrive at the disaster area. In the search and rescue process of more than ten hours after the earthquake, the brigade rescued a total of 9 buried people and evacuated more than 160 people, playing an irreplaceable role. After the earthquake, all the members of the Jishishan County Fire and Rescue Brigade braved the low temperature of minus 15 °C, braved the continuous aftershocks at the scene, and frequently went deep into the broken walls and debris to carry out rescue and evacuate the people.
