Chapter 1: Childhood

Section 1 Born in a martial arts family

Our hometown is in Zhounan Village, Daqiang Township, Qianxian County, Shaanxi Province (now Zhounanjia, Daqiang Village, Xuelu Town), and our ancestors have been farmers for generations. My father was born on the 12th day of the third lunar month in 1926 in the Deyi Hotel in Guyuan, Ningxia, where his grandfather was the shopkeeper. Because he looked dull when he was born, the adults gave him the nickname "Dull Baby", and because their generation was the "Pei" generation, they named him "Nan Peiliang", and after participating in the revolution, he changed his name to Nan Liang.

Grandfather Nan Youcai (also known as Nan Youfu) was born in 1886 and died on the 20th day of the sixth lunar month in 1949. Grandpa is a well-known "boxer" in our local area, proficient in more than 100 types of boxing, including hand-to-hand boxing, swords, guns, swords, sticks, and countless boxing techniques. He made a living by practicing boxing and martial arts, and usually took his apprentices to travel across the county to "set up a scene" to earn money to support his family. When he went out, he was followed by his eldest apprentice, Dongxi Village Dong San. Dong San usually picks up a pair of burdens, just like Monk Lisha in "Journey to the West", the difference is that the front of the burden is dancing with knives, guns, swords and sticks, and the daily necessities of their master and apprentice are carried in the back. When we were children, we called him "Dong Sanye", and the neighbors called him "Dong San Old Man". Later, Dong Sanye also taught us "Plum Blossom Boxing". At that time, he was already sixty or seventy years old, and his arms were bent into "cow lattices", and as a result, the arms of the plum blossom boxing we learned were not very stretched.

Grandpa is strong in martial arts, and there is no opponent in a radius. No matter where he went, the "field" put up and greeted his father and fellow villagers with his fists, and then said a sentence that shocked the audience: "Punch Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, and kick the heroes of the world!" "I have traveled to countless places in Shaanxi, Gansu, and Ningxia for decades, and basically I have not met anyone who is stronger than his martial arts, and sometimes I have encountered martial arts masters who are not convinced and come to "step on the field", but none of them can win against him.

Where did Grandpa learn his kung fu, we don't know in detail. I heard my father say that my grandfather's grandfather was Wu Xiucai in the last years of the Qing Dynasty, and he could sweep the soles of five layers of shoes and a big wolf to death with a "sweeping leg". Grandpa's kung fu may have come from this.

Born in such a martial arts family, his father learned many boxing routines and techniques from his grandfather since he was a child, which laid a solid foundation for his later martial arts research and teaching apprenticeship.

Around 1924, my grandfather came to Guyuan, Ningxia, and made friends with many martial arts heroes. In martial arts, it is generally a martial arts competition to make friends, and the two strong fights, and the winner is the boss. Once, a nationally famous martial arts master came to Guyuan at that time, and when he heard that his grandfather was strong in martial arts, he made an appointment to make a move, and the two sides faced each other with stick skills. Before the start of the game, both sides put their sticks under their feet. After going on the field, they hugged each other's fists and greeted each other, and the referee gave an order to "the guy"! Grandpa's eyes were quick, he rolled the stick backwards with his foot, and then suddenly picked it up and held it in his hand, and without waiting for the opponent to hold the stick steady, he twisted his thumb with the stick in one move, and the opponent threw the stick far away in pain. Grandpa stopped, threw the stick aside and walked away. When leaving, leave a sentence, "Just these two times, and compare with me"! The other party hugged his fist and admitted defeat, and his grandfather's position in the rivers and lakes was further consolidated.

According to my father, my grandfather was still a relatively high-ranking person in the Qinghong Gang, and he was one of the high-level leaders of several provinces in Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia. He often saw his grandfather meeting with some martial arts masters, and if he said some "black words" that ordinary people couldn't understand, most of them were "Tao" brothers. For example, they call brooms "Baina", and there are also special terms for other everyday objects.

When my father was born, there were five of us in my family, my grandfather, my grandmother, my aunt, my aunt and my father. Grandpa earned some broken silver by boxing, gained a firm foothold in Guyuan, and then invested in opening a restaurant in Guyuan City, named "Deyi Hotel", and took his grandmother and two aunts over.

On the 12th day of the third lunar month in 1926, my father was born in the Deyi Hotel. He was the only boy in the family for many years. His arrival added great joy to the whole family, and immediately became the pearl of his grandparents' palms, not only the family revolved around him, but the entire Deyi Hotel revolved around him. Although grandpa is illiterate, he eats on the rivers and lakes all year round and has heard many martial arts stories. He often told his father these stories, among which "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", "Water Margin", "The Complete Biography of Yue Fei" and so on his father liked to listen to the most. Although I don't seem to understand it, I admire the heroes in the story very much. One year, during the Spring Festival, every household pasted Spring Festival couplets, hung lanterns, and pasted New Year's pictures on the door. My father didn't want Qin Qiong Jingde, so he had to make a fuss about Zhang Fei's "Changban Slope roared on the Changban Slope and drank the water of the three rivers flowing backwards". Grandpa had no choice, so he mobilized dozens of guys from the whole store to go to Guyuan City to look for it, and finally found the "Changban Slope" New Year's painting on a used bookstall before he could be considered to appease the "Brother Gongzi".

In 1929 (the eighteenth year of the Republic of China), Guanzhong suffered a great drought, and his hometown Qianxian was starving, with ten rooms and nine empty. Dozens of relatives and friends from Zhounan's family, Dazhang Zhaizi and Panzhou Village, grandma's mother's home, and young people next door ran to Guyuan to join their grandfather. Grandpa arranged for them to work in restaurants, and also found partners for many of the young people to make homes. For the poor people who came to the restaurant to ask for food, Grandpa always instructed the guys to give them food. After his reputation for righteousness and squandering wealth spread, not only did the beggar Hanako often come to the store to ask for food, but the jugglers and screamers (who used self-harm to earn money by playing hard kung fu to earn money) also became frequent customers in the store. At this time, Grandpa did what he could to help, so much so that the front and backyard of the hotel were full of people calling Hanako and jugglers. Grandpa later returned to his hometown of Zhounan's house, and the yard of the family was often full of screaming and begging for food. At that time, the home was basically a "refugee shelter".

The sons and nephews of their grandfather's hometown who went to Guyuan were honest and simple, and some were more open-minded, especially at that time, they were all young people, who earned a few dollars in the restaurant, and there were many people who showed off their might and looked for flowers and willows. Among them, the son of a distant relative worked as a partner in his grandfather's restaurant, and after a long time, he had a relationship with a local married woman. The man had heard about his daughter-in-law and his partner for a long time, and he carefully set up a situation that day, and the man really hit the plan, and the ambushed thugs swarmed up, arrested the man and his daughter-in-law, tied them up and tortured them. I wanted to teach him a lesson to make him have a longer memory, but there were many people, and everyone felt that the hand was not heavy, and the guy died in a few clicks. The family was very panicked, and heard that the deceased was the "nephew" of the owner of the "Deyi Hotel" and the boxer "Nan Laosan", and the murderer was so frightened that he fled to another country overnight, and the woman involved committed suicide by jumping into a well that night. Grandpa learned that the unangry "nephew" had done something wrong, and did not send someone to trouble the family, but pulled the body back overnight to find a place to bury it quietly, without making any noise to the outside world.

Grandpa opened a restaurant to earn some money, most of which was used for the man's salary and expanding the scale of business, and part of it was sent back to his hometown to subsidize his brother and younger brother's family. He sent money in a peculiar way, often hollowing out a part of a mahogany table, hiding silver dollars or tobacco in it, sealing it with a wooden board on the outside, and sending the table home. When the family receives the table, they take out the silver dollar tobacco in the agreed way and use the table for daily use. In the fifties of the last century after liberation, this kind of table can still be seen in our hometown.

The soaphorn tree at the entrance of Zhounanjia Village

Around 1933, my grandmother returned to my hometown of Zhounan with her two aunts, and my grandfather took my father to stay in Guyuan. Shortly after my grandmother returned home, in 1935, she died of tuberculosis. Soon, the two aunts married one after another. The aunt's name is Rong Xian, married to the north gate of Wang Village, and died of tuberculosis in 1942. The second aunt's name is Umbrella Umbrella, married to Fudefu Village, her husband's name is Chen Derang, a primary school teacher, and the second aunt died of tuberculosis in 1944. Neither aunt left any children. Tuberculosis, commonly known as tuberculosis, was an infectious disease and was an incurable disease at the time. My grandmother and two aunts were infected with each other and both became victims of the disease. After the death of the two aunts, there were only two people left in the family: grandfather and father. Due to the Kuomintang's excesses in taxes and miscellaneous taxes, my grandfather's restaurant was overwhelmed and could not be opened, so he disposed of the restaurant and took his father (9 years old at the time) back to his hometown Zhounanjia Village, Qianxian County, Shaanxi Province, and continued to "put on a show" and sell martial arts for a living. Since his father did not live in his hometown since he was a child, he did not contract tuberculosis and was the only healthy child in the family.

Grandpa took his father back to his hometown This time, he was robbed by bandits on the way. The bandits smashed open the door of the hotel in the middle of the night and asked him to take out the money. If it had been in the past, a few bandits would have let Grandpa go down a long time ago. But this time, he looked at his only son and chose to compromise. He took out some silver from his baggage: "That's all, take it and get out of here!" The bandits saw that there was a lot of silver, and then they listened to the momentum like a rainbow, and probably saw the martial arts equipment in the corner, and when they saw it, they accepted it, and ran away with the silver. This is probably the only time in his grandfather's life that he swallowed his anger, mainly to protect his lone seedling. (To be continued)
