Semi-annual examination of credit cards of the six major banks: the number of cards issued and the scale of transactions have generally decreased, and the non-performing rate of ICBC has risen to 3.03%

In the first half of 2024, the credit card business of the six major state-owned banks has also surfaced with the disclosure of the semi-annual report, and Blue Whale Finance has found through statistics that the number of credit cards issued by most banks and the scale of business have shrunk at the same time, and the non-performing rate has also risen, except for the Bank of China's non-performing rate has decreased slightly, and the non-performing rate of ICBC has even reached 3.03%.

The number of cards issued has generally declined, and the Bank of Communications has the highest decline

From the trial implementation to the official implementation of the new credit card regulations in July this year, banking financial institutions are required not to use the number of cards issued and the number of customers as a single or main assessment index, and banking financial institutions with a long-term dormant card rate of more than 20% shall not issue new cards.

In this context, on the one hand, the credit card centers of major banks have eliminated "long-term dormant cards", and in the process of transformation, the pace and number of credit card issuance of banks have slowed down significantly. On the other hand, banks are also investing resources in the operation of refined equity services for high-value customers.

As shown in the annual reports disclosed by the banks, the number of credit cards issued and the number of customers of some banks have further declined. Take the six major state-owned banks as an example, and the total number of credit cards in four of them has dropped significantly from the beginning of the year.

The comparison found that the number of credit cards of Bank of Communications and Postal Savings Bank decreased significantly compared with the end of the year, and the decrease rate of Bank of Communications was significantly higher than that of other state-owned banks, ranking first. Specifically, as of the end of June, the total number of credit cards of the Bank of Communications was 64,888,300, a decrease of 6,435,900 from the beginning of the year, followed by the Postal Savings Bank, with a total of 39,577,000 cards, a decrease of 2,822,600 from the beginning of the year.

Secondly, the total number of credit cards of ICBC and CCB was 152 million and 131 million respectively, and the two major banks both decreased by about 1 million from the beginning of the year.

It is worth mentioning that among the five state-owned banks, Bank of China is the only bank with positive growth, although the growth rate of credit cards is small. As of the end of June, the total number of credit cards of Bank of China was 146 million, an increase of 2.0695 million, an increase of 1.44%.

Therefore, optimizing the credit card product line became a top priority.

Among them, the Agricultural Bank of China said that it would launch a series of platinum cards to increase consumer credit, focusing on key consumer areas such as automobiles, home improvement and home appliances, and mobile phone digital. The Bank of Communications also said that it actively grasped market opportunities and continued to increase the penetration of automobile installment scenarios, and the results showed that the balance of automobile installments of Bank of Communications increased by 20.443 billion yuan compared with the beginning of the year, an increase of 72.81%. Affected by this, the decline in the amount of credit card consumption of Bank of Communications ranked first in Bank of China, and the increase in the installment balance of automobiles slightly eased the pressure on the performance of credit card overdrafts.

The scale of transactions generally declined, and the Agricultural Bank of China achieved growth against the trend

Overall, the contraction in the amount of credit card transactions of the above-mentioned banks has further expanded, and only the Agricultural Bank of China has achieved positive growth compared with the beginning of the year.
