Villa Benkemoun, Arles, France / Émile Sala

Villa Benkemoun, Arles, France / Émile Sala

Outside Arles, France, the iconic Villa Benkemoun, designed by Le Corbusier's disciple Émile Sala, celebrates its 50th anniversary. Built in 1974 and characterized by fluid forms and dynamic spaces, the villa was originally designed for Simone and Pierre Benkemoun, a couple who dreamed of living in an airy, open house. To this day, the residence remains an important architectural icon. Today, although it is no longer a private residence, it is still an important architectural landmark and is now being reused as an exhibition venue for various public events. To celebrate its half-century milestone, the villa will host a special exhibition curated by Raphael Giannesini featuring Alain Jacquet, Claude Parent, Enzo Mari, India Mahdavi, Isabelle Cornaro, Works by famous artists such as Michel Journiac, Joseph-André Motte, Romain Laprade, Victor Vasarely and many others.

The architect Emile Sala regarded Le Corbusier as his master, and he was completely free to work at the Villa Benquemont. He uses soft volumes and alternating light and shadow to create fluid and dynamic spaces. Instead of straight lines, he uses curves to make the space feel softer. This organic architecture sometimes reminds him of neurons, while the layout of the villa also resembles the circulation of a manor or rial centered on a patio. The overall design incorporates the futuristic influences of the 60s of the 20th century and takes into account the physical and environmental potential of the landscape. This approach is in line with early bioclimatic building theories and is still relevant today.

Pierre and Simone Benkemoun have lived happily for 45 years in this iconic villa, surrounded by their three children and later three grandchildren, who always host large gatherings of friends and family. In 2017, their daughter Brigitte Benkemoun and husband Thierry Demaizière decided to renovate the villa and open it to the public. Today, this iconic building from the 70s of the 20th century can be used for filming, conferences, dinners and other special events. It also hosts art exhibitions and is open for occasional visits.
