“只有在绘画中,你才能做你想做的任何事”‘It’s only in painting that youcan do everything you want’——赫文·安德森
Hervin · Anderson (1965-) United Kingdom artist
Herwin · Anderson was born in Birmingham, United Kingdom, grew up in the Caribbean and later settled in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. He received his BA from Wimbledon College of Art in London in 1994 and his MA from the Royal College of Art in London in 1998.
His work often reflects the contradictions and conflicts between identity and modern United Kingdom culture. Born to Jamaica immigrants, memories of the Afro-Caribbean community living in Birmingham as a child and numerous visits to Trinidad and Tobago form the main sources of inspiration for his work. Anderson's painting scenes switch freely between abstraction and figuration.
Using lush, textured and patterned imagery, he establishes contradictions and juxtapositions, exploring spaces inhabited by Caribbean immigrants, such as public parks, gardens, barbershops, and home interiors, which serve as venues for social gatherings as well as places for economic enterprise. These places represent the artist's personal and cultural memories of the Caribbean's functional spaces and shared experiences. evokes the uncertainty of living between different cultures. The abstract paintings in the works contain rich cultural connotations. His work reveals the complexities of growing up in United Kingdom while longing to reconnect with his family roots, which he achieves through his attachment to the medium of painting itself.
