Volcanic eruption of the Island of Suwa in Japan

TOKYO, March 31 (Xinhua) -- According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a large-scale eruption occurred on mount Ogaku on Suwajima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, from the evening of the 30th to the early morning of the 31st.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the volcano has recently had small-scale eruptions. From 10:05 p.m. on the 30th to 2:57 a.m. local time on the 31st, the volcano began to erupt large pieces of volcanic slag, and the smoke and dust erupted was up to 800 meters away from the crater.

The Japan Meteorological Agency immediately raised the warning level of the volcanic eruption of Suwa Noose Island from Level 2 to Level 3, implemented mountain access control, and called on the island residents to be wary of large volcanic slag and volcanic ash.

Suwa no Seto Island has about 80 inhabitants, and the village closest to the crater is 3 km away. Kagoshima Prefectural police said they had not received any reports of casualties or damage to buildings caused by the eruption so far.

Koji Nakamura, chief of the volcano surveillance section of the Japan Meteorological Agency, said at a press conference on the 31st that as of now, there is no data showing that the volcano will erupt again on a large scale.

Suwa Nose Island is an active volcanic island located in the middle of the Togara Islands, with an area of about 27 square kilometers, a coastline of 27 kilometers, and Mt. Misak at an altitude of 799 meters.
