This past weekend, five people in the crowd were shot and taken to hospital, one of whom was believed to be life-threatening, after a shooting occurred at an annual celebration celebrating Africville's history in Halifax, Canada.

At about 10 p.m. Saturday, Halifax area police said they had "received reports of multiple shots fired at the annual gathering in Africville," according to globalnews.

After an investigation, police found that the two men had "exchanged gunfire at the scene, causing bullets to shoot into the surrounding crowd and hit five people." ”
In an update Sunday afternoon, police said four of the five people who were taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the crossfire were in their 20s, with one of the victims in his teens. The police did not provide other identifying information about the victims.

Public Information Officer John MacLeod said on Sunday that "we don't have specific suspect information at this time," but stressed that police did not believe it was a "random" incident and suggested that another person at the celebration was "targeted" and that the five people who were taken to the hospital were all bystanders.
It is unclear if the targeted person was injured.

Paula Grant-Smith, a former Africville resident, was outraged by the violence, describing being at the scene as "in a war zone" and everyone was running for their lives.
"I'm angry that my grandchildren, nieces and nephews had to go through all this last night."

Mayor Mike Savage spoke about the incident in a post on social media X.
"Africville parties are a time of celebration for family, friends and friendship. I extend my condolences to those who were injured last night and to all those affected by the shooting. ”
