(Zhang Ailing)
01
Zhang Ailing is the best and most important female writer in modern China, and her representative works "Love in a Fallen City", "The Golden Lock", "Red Rose and White Rose", "Half Life", etc., occupy a place in the history of modern Chinese literature.
Zhang Ailing was born in a famous family, and her grandmother's name is Li Ju. Li Ju's father was Li Hongzhang, an important minister in the late Qing Dynasty.
Zhang Ailing's grandfather's name was Zhang Peilun, and he was the late Qing Dynasty shipping minister.
Zhang Ailing's father, Zhang Zhiyi, studied in United Kingdom and worked as an English secretary of the Tianjin Jinpu Railway Bureau, and later became addicted to opium.
Zhang Ailing's mother's name was Huang Suqiong (later renamed Huang Yifan), a new woman who had studied oil painting in United Kingdom.

Huang Suqiong was born in a prominent family, and her grandfather Huang Yisheng served as the admiral of the seven provinces of the Yangtze River in the late Qing Dynasty.
Zhang Ailing, formerly known as Zhang Ying, was born in Shanghai on September 30, 1920, and was born in Fengrun, Hebei Province.
Younger brother Zhang Zijing is 1 year younger than Zhang Ailing and was born in 1921.
When Zhang Ailing's sister and brother were born, the family road had already fallen, and her father Zhang Zhiyi and mother Huang Suqiong had no formal occupation and lived by eating inheritance.
Zhang Zhiyi is full of son-in-law temper, smokes a lot, prostitutes, and has no power to restrain chickens, and Huang Suqiong hates her husband.
(Zhang Ailing with her father and younger brother)
And Huang Suqiong is a new feminist, demanding freedom and independence, and does not want to be a vassal of her husband.
The couple hated each other, often clashed at home, and the marriage was in name only.
The relationship between the parents has brought deep damage to the young hearts of Zhang Ailing's sisters and brothers, and the phrase "the world is hot and cold, and human affection is as thin as paper" has been engraved in their bones.
In order to escape marriage, in 1924, Huang Suqiong abandoned her family to study in United Kingdom. At this time, Zhang Ailing was only 4 years old, and her younger brother Zhang Zijing was 3 years old.
Zhang Zhiyi refused and was unable to pay for his wife's study abroad. When Huang Suqiong returned to China during the winter and summer vacations, she sold her mother's dowry-antiques. Zhang Zhiyi and his wife often fight at home in order to rob antiques, and Zhang Ailing and her younger brother stand aside and cry.
(Zhang Ailing's mother)
In 1928, Huang Suqiong returned from studying abroad and officially separated from Zhang Zhiyi. The couple are strangers, except for quarrels, they usually have no communication at home. The indifferent, depressed, and distorted marital relationship between her parents greatly affected the character development of Zhang Ailing's siblings.
In 1930, Zhang Zhiyi and Huang Suqiong started a divorce lawsuit. After a difficult lawsuit, the two divorced in the same year, and Zhang Ailing's sister and brother lived with their father.
02
After the divorce, Huang Suqiong wandered in Europe, and it was difficult for Zhang Ailing's sister and brother to see their mother.
Zhang Zhiyi has no occupation and income, and lives by selling property. Zhang Ailing and her younger brother live with the nanny and often go hungry and have a full meal.
(Sun Yongfan)
In 1934, Zhang Zhiyi remarried. Zhang Ailing's stepmother is named Sun Yongfan, and she is also from a famous family.
Sun Yongfan's father, Sun Baoqi, is the former prime minister of the Republic of China, and he and Zhang Zhiyi are also a good match.
Because of Zhang Zhiyi's health, Sun Yongfan did not give birth to children. She is a mean stepmother who is particularly strict with Zhang Ailing's sister and brother.
Zhang Ailing has a pungent personality, often quarrels with her stepmother, and runs away from home. Sun Yongfan was a little afraid of Zhang Ailing, so he vented his anger on his stepson Zhang Zijing.
Zhang Zijing is introverted and weak, and his stepmother treats him as a soft persimmon and often makes him eat leftovers. Zhang Zijing expressed her dissatisfaction, and her stepmother simply dumped the leftovers into the trash and starved him.
(Zhang Ailing and her younger brother Zhang Zijing)
Zhang Zijing complained to his father, but Zhang Zhiyi was afraid of causing family conflicts and didn't dare to care at all.
Zhang Zijing hoped that her sister could protect herself, but Zhang Ailing scolded her younger brother: You are a boy, why do you need a girl to protect you? Unpromising! Zhang Zijing's eyes were full of tears of grievance.
Zhang Zhiyi smoked a lot, Sun Yongfan was dissatisfied, and the couple continued to fight. Every time after a quarrel, Zhang Zhiyi lived outside and didn't go home, and Sun Yongfan scolded and cried at home. Zhang Zijing hid in the corridor and cried, he was extremely disgusted with this home, and he didn't know when this torment would end?
Zhang Zijing is a poor child who has not enjoyed the love of his father and mother since he was a child, and he has been bullied by his stepmother.
Due to her father's irresponsibility, Zhang Zijing only entered primary school at the age of 10, 3 to 4 years later than normal children.
(Zhang Ailing and her younger brother)
In 1936, Huang Suqiong returned to Shanghai from Europe and took Zhang Ailing away. Zhang Zijing wanted to go with her mother and sister, but Huang Suqiong refused: My ability is limited, and I can't support you two sisters and brothers.
Looking at the backs of her mother and sister, Zhang Zijing's face was full of tears, and her heart was extremely cold.
03
Soon, Zhang Zijing had a quarrel with her stepmother, so she packed her personal belongings and went to her mother's house.
Zhang Zijing tearfully recounted the humiliation she had suffered at home over the years, saying that she would not go back and would live with her mother and sister.
Huang Suqiong disagreed, and it was still the same reason: I can't support your sister and brother. Zhang Zijing looked at her sister, hoping that she could say something for herself, but Zhang Ailing also urged her younger brother to go back.
(Zhang Ailing)
Zhang Zijing didn't leave, and his mother issued an eviction order: There is still a little rice left at home, which is only enough for our mother and daughter to eat.
Zhang Zijing's heart was broken, and he walked out with one foot high and one foot low. On the way home, he sat on the side of the street for a long time, and he couldn't stop crying.
Zhang Zijing has parents and sisters, but he doesn't feel the warmth of family affection at all, he feels that he is an orphan and has been left on an isolated island.
When she returned home, Zhang Zijing fell ill and developed a high fever. The next morning, Zhang Zhiyi was going to a tobacco shop to smoke again, and his wife Sun Yongfan asked him to send his son to the hospital, and Zhang Zhiyi slipped away while his wife was not careful.
(Zhang Ailing (8th from left)'s student days)
Sun Yongfan was scolding and crying while throwing things at home. Seeing that her stepson's face was burning red, she pulled a hairpin from her hair and dangled it, and then sent Zhang Zijing to the hospital.
When the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937, Zhang Zijing was forced to interrupt his studies. In 1938, at the age of 17, Zhang Zijing entered a middle school in Shanghai, while his sister Zhang Ailing went to the University of Hong Kong for further study.
In 1939, Huang Suqiong and her new United States boyfriend went to Singapore, and the family was scattered, and family affection became more indifferent.
After graduating from high school in 1943, Zhang Zijing and his classmates founded the literary monthly magazine "Hurricane" in Shanghai.
(Zhang Ailing's early works)
At this time, Zhang Ailing published novels such as "Agarwood Crumbs: The First Incense", "Love in a Fallen City", and "The Golden Lock", which became a smash hit in Shanghai.
In order to expand the influence of "Hurricane", Zhang Zijing found her sister and hoped that she could publish a novel on "Hurricane". Zhang Ailing refused: This kind of publication you run is not famous, I can't write for you, and ruin my reputation.
Zhang Zijing's eyes were full of disappointment and sadness, Zhang Ailing couldn't bear it, so she picked up a sketch and sent her brother away: You can use this as an illustration.
So Zhang Zijing wrote the article "My Sister Zhang Ailing", which was posted on "Hurricane" together with this sketch.
In view of Eileen Chang's huge influence, the current issue of the magazine was out of stock. Since then, however, the magazine's sales have been shrinking, and it has been forced to cease publication a year later.
(Zhang Ailing and Hu Lancheng)
In 1944, Zhang Ailing married the cultural traitor Hu Lancheng.
At that time, Hu Lancheng's fourth marriage was underway, but for the sake of Zhang Ailing, he divorced without hesitation.
In August 1944, Zhang Ailing and Hu Lancheng signed a marriage letter, but they did not hold a wedding. After marriage, Hu Lancheng went to Wuhan to run a newspaper, and Zhang Ailing separated from her husband.
04
After Japan surrendered in 1945, the whole country began to search for traitors. Under the arrangement of the Japanese, Hu Lancheng disguised himself as a wounded Japanese soldier and then fled Wuhan by boat. After that, Hu Lancheng assumed the alias Zhang Jiayi and fled all over the country.
In 1946, while on the way to escape, Hu Lancheng had a relationship with nurse Fan Xiumei, and the two soon got married. After marriage, Hu Lancheng taught in a middle school in Wenzhou.
Zhang Ailing learned of Hu Lancheng's news and rushed to Wenzhou to visit, but she was greeted by Hu Lancheng's 6th wife Fan Xiumei.
Zhang Ailing was filled with grief and anger, and divorced Hu Lancheng in tears.
After Zhang Zijing ceased publication of the literary monthly magazine "Hurricane", with the help of his cousin and cousin-in-law, he entered the Department of Economics of St. John's University for further study.
After graduating in 1946, Zhang Zijing joined the Yangzhou branch of the Central Bank as a clerk.
At this time, Zhang Zijing was 25 years old, and it was time to get married and start a family. However, his father, who has always been indifferent to Zhang Zijing, haunted him like a bloodsucking worm.
(Zhang Zhiyi)
Due to his perennial smoking, Zhang Zhiyi squandered many of his family's properties and wealth. He went to Zhang Ailing and asked his daughter to support the family for him, but Zhang Ailing kicked him out.
His son Zhang Zijing was introverted and honest, and Zhang Zhiyi forced him to take out all his salary to support his family. Zhang Zijing struggled, but his father did even more desperately: every time it was time for his son to pay his salary, Zhang Zhiyi would go to the door of the finance room early to wait, and often the money was taken away by his father before it was covered in Zhang Zijing's hands.
Zhang Zijing hated his father deeply, and cried in despair many times in the dark night.
In 1947, Huang Suqiong, who had been doing business in Singapore, returned to Shanghai due to the death of her United States boyfriend.
After living abroad for many years, Huang Suqiong was out of step with the living environment in Shanghai, and in 1948, she decided to settle in United Kingdom.
(Zhang Ailing's manuscript of "Color · Ring")
Zhang Zijing wanted to get rid of his father and proposed to go abroad with his mother. Huang Suqiong had no feelings for her son and refused.
Zhang Zijing was discouraged, often buying drunk in small restaurants, and then sitting on the street at midnight and crying.
After the liberation of Shanghai in 1949, Zhang Zijing left the bank and entered a primary school in Pudong, Shanghai, to teach Chinese and English.
At this time, Zhang Zijing's monthly salary was less than half of what it used to be, and it was used to help his father support the family.
In 1953, Zhang Zhiyi died of illness in Shanghai. Since then, Zhang Zijing has unloaded the economic burden.

But at this time, Zhang Zijing was 32 years old and had never been in love, let alone married and had children. In the best years of his marriage and love, in order to help his father support the family, Zhang Zijing missed a good marriage.
The inheritance left by his father to Zhang Zijing is a small house of 14 square meters, which is jointly inherited by him and his stepmother. The mother and son lived in a small house and had many conflicts. The stepmother wants to monopolize the property and is bent on squeezing out Zhang Zijing.
Zhang Zijing had nowhere to go in Shanghai, and resolutely refused to give in, and the mother and son stumbled together.
In 1955, Zhang Ailing moved to United States, and Zhang Zijing proposed to go with her sister, but was refused.

(60-70s, United States, middle-aged Eileen Zhang)
Soon after arriving in the United States, Eileen Chang met the German-American playwright Raiya. He was born in Germany in 1891, 29 years older than Eileen Chang.
Laiya was divorced in her early years, has been single, and was hospitalized with a stroke. He was knowledgeable and eloquent, and Eileen Chang was fascinated by his talent.
On August 18, 1956, Eileen Zhang and Lai Ya registered their marriage in New York, United States.
After only two months of marriage, Lai Ya suffered a stroke, and Zhang Ailing was by her side to take care of her husband.
Zhang Ailing got married for such a big thing, and she didn't tell her younger brother, Zhang Zijing only learned about it from relatives and friends two years later. The indifference of family affection and the strangeness of my sister pierced Zhang Zijing's heart.
(Zhang Ailing, United States, 1966)
In September 1957, Huang Suqiong unfortunately died of illness in United Kingdom, and Zhang Zijing was unable to go to United Kingdom for funeral. Zhang Ailing had to take care of her husband, plus she couldn't afford a plane ticket, and she didn't go to United Kingdom to see her mother for the last time.
When Huang Suqiong died, none of her children were around.
Both parents have died, her sister is far away in United States, and Zhang Zijing has no relatives in Shanghai.
Zhang Zi was quietly kind-hearted, and when his stepmother was old, he supported his stepmother until the old man died.
In April 1967, Lai Ya died of illness. Since then, Zhang Ailing has not remarried and has always been single.
(Zhang Zijing)
At that time, China was in a special era, and Zhang Zijing was discriminated against and disregarded because of her background, and she and her sister were also cut off.
Zhang Zijing is a man with his tail between his legs, he doesn't dare to think about marriage and love, and no person of the opposite sex looks up to him.
In the early 80s of last century, with the help of relatives and friends, Zhang Zijing and her sister had a correspondence.
Zhang Zijing, who is middle-aged, wants to start a family, but he has no money and wants to be financially supported by his sister. So he wrote 3 letters to his sister in a row, euphemistically expressing his financial difficulties. Zhang Ailing rejected her brother in a reply, saying that she was not well-off.
Zhang Ailing has not seen her since she went to United States, and her younger brother Zhang Zijing has never seen her. For decades, Zhang Ailing did not return to China, Zhang Zijing did not go to United States, and there was no contact between siblings, and they were strangers.
(July 1994, Zhang Ailing's last photo before her death)
On September 8, 1995, Eileen Chang died in Los Angeles, United States, at the age of 75. No one informed Zhang Zijing that he could not go to the United States for the funeral.
Before Zhang Ailing died, she left a will: after she died, everything was left to Song Qi and his wife.
Song Qi was a friend of Zhang Ailing, and later Zhang Ailing's royalty income was an astronomical amount.
Zhang Ailing did not mention her younger brother Zhang Zijing in her will, and he did not receive a penny of his sister's inheritance.
(Zhang Ailing's most exposed classic photo)
Zhang Zijing was poor all her life, and lived a depressed and difficult life. After retiring, Zhang Zijing lived alone in a 14-square-meter dwelling. He never married, had no children and no daughters, and finally died alone.
In 1997, Zhang Zijing died in Shanghai.
At the time of his death, Zhang Zijing did not have any relatives around her.
