What is Breakthrough? The sport will make its debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics

At the 2024 Olympics we will see a brand new sport and breakdancing will join the mix.

It's certainly not your typical Olympic event, but the IOC's goal is to attract more young people and add new events to the Paris Olympics.

While most people are familiar with breakdancing, how will it become an Olympic sport?

What is Break? The history and origins of the Olympic Movement

Breakdancing (often referred to as "breakdancing") is a style of dance with strong urban roots.

According to olympics.com, the sport originated in the Bronx borough of New York City in the 70s of the 20th century and was characterized by "acrobatic moves, stylized footwork, and the key role played by DJs and MCs (master of ceremonies) in combat."

Breaking competitions have been held since the 1990s. Since then, the popularity of breaking has grown and has led to the creation of an international organization, the World DanceSport Federation.

The sport made its debut at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in 2018.

The organisers considered the inclusion of breaking a success and included it as a new sport for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Breakthroughs at the Olympics: rules, scoring

For many people, dance is seen as an art form, which makes it difficult to score or rate objectively.

However, Paris has already established this system.

The competition will feature two medal events, one for men and one for women, with a total of 16 "b-boys" and "b-girls" participating.

A maximum of four athletes per continent are allowed to compete in each event.

The judges will score the solo competition based on six criteria:

  • creativity
  • nature
  • technology
  • class
  • Performative
  • Musicality

An odd number of referees (at least three) are required to rate the match.

Technique, performativeness, and creativity account for 60% of the total score, while variety, musicality, and personality account for 40% of the total score.

At the end of each round, the judges vote, and the contestant with the highest score wins.
