Phil Foden has dismissed claims that he can't play with Jude Bellingham on the same team as England try to get their best out of their top stars at Euro 2024.
A headline in the Daily Mail this week claimed that Foden and Bellingham "look like the new Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard", referring to the shortcomings of England's last generation of golden players.
Steven Gerrard and Frank are both the best players in the world, but they never really played in the same midfield for England. Foden and Bellingham are currently on a similar ship.
The 2023/24 season saw each player have the best season of their careers, with the former scoring 27 goals for Manchester City and the latter 23 for Real Madrid. Foden has been named FWA Footballer of the Year, while Bellingham was behind Madrid's record 15th Champions League victory. But with England at Euro 2024, Foden struggled to be involved when playing on the left flank, with Bellingham also standing out rather than consistently.
Ahead of the quarter-final game against Switzerland, Foden commented: "This season I've shown Manchester City that I'm more focused on my movements, I'm scoring more goals and I'm influencing more games. I've always been honest about my position, I've always considered myself a midfielder. ”。“ I don't agree (I can't play with Bellingham) and I feel like in the last few games I played well. ”
Despite some outstanding attacking talent, England have scored four goals in four games at Euro 2024, including Harry Kane's extra-time win over Slovakia. In that game, the Three Lions were almost on their way home until Bellingham equalised in stoppage time.
The Swiss are a well-trained team that came close to beating Germany in the group stage and convincingly eliminated Italy in the round of 16.
