Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has not played since February, but Gareth Southgate still selected him for England for Euro 2024, which is being played in Germany. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old left wing-back was unable to recover from a hamstring injury on time, and British media revealed that he was even injured again in training.
Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier made a cameo on the left in England's first two group games, with Solskjaer hoping that 'Manchester United' could be used as a substitute in the second round against Denmark. However, Luke Shaw failed to do so. England reporters spotted him limping down the tunnel and appeared to have been injured again.
The Daily Mail revealed that Luke Shaw has not trained again since midweek, which also confirms the rumours of another injury. England have confirmed that he will miss Tuesday's final group game against Slovenia and may not even be able to play in any of them. In Germany, Luke Shaw has never been involved in a team-wide training session and is the only member of the team who has not trained properly. On Sunday, he was again absent from the team's training.
In the England squad, Liverpool's Joe Gomes can play in all positions, including left-back, while Aston Villa's Konsa has also impressed Southgate in training and can also play on the left. However, Solskjaer opted to take the risk of bringing in Luke Shaw, who is not returning from injury, rather than Chelsea's Ben Chilwell or Crystal Palace's Trick Mitchell.
The British media ridiculed Southgate's choice, ridiculing that the only role of bringing Luke Shaw was to help him and his family on a summer trip to Germany. One source said: "Luke (Shaw) hasn't played for more than four months. Even if he plays, he won't be fully fit and there is a good chance that he will miss the European Championship altogether."
Luke Shaw has considered leaving the England squad to rest in time for United's new campaign, however, it doesn't seem to make much sense as his injury will not make much difference in England or going on holiday.
Before the European Championships, Luke Shaw condemned Manchester United's doctor for risking him to continue playing for Luton Town after he was withdrawn at half-time in the game against Villa, only to be substituted again at half-time due to a recurrence of an old injury. Now, with Dutch left-back Terrell Malacia also suffering a serious injury and missing a minute last season, United are considering bringing in a young full-back who can play on both the left and right in the summer window.
In the Wembley stands in the FA Cup final, fans saw Malacia for the long time and, interestingly, wearing the number 11 training shirt instead of his own number 12. It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old Dutch left-back will be available for pre-season and Ten Hag is ready to call up 17-year-old left-back Harry Amass for United's youth team in pre-season.
Reports previously confirmed Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez as a target for Manchester United and now that the summer transfer window has opened, any direct talks with the defender will have to wait until he returns from the European Championships, where he currently represents Hungary.
The 20-year-old left-back, who joined from AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands for £15.5million in July 2023, has played an integral role in his first season in the Premier League, starting 22 games in a season in which the Cherries set a Premier League high (48). However, Kolkez are at odds with manager Anthony Ilora and Bournemouth will agree to sell if someone makes an offer of £40 million.
