Beijing, October 23 (China News Service) (Reporter Ma Haiyan) The list of "TOEFL China's 40 Years and 40 People" was announced on the 23rd. Shi Yigong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of West Lake University, and Shao Feng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and deputy director of the Beijing Institute of Life Sciences, are on the list.

ETS (American Educational Testing Service Center) held a symposium in Beijing on the theme of "Building Dreams for 40 Years, Innovation to the Future" and GRE (American Graduate Admission Test) for the 40th Anniversary of Entering China. The list was released at the symposium to recognize 40 representative international students over the past 40 years and representatives who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of international exchanges and the development of international education. Liu Limin, President of the China Education Association for International Exchange, presented awards to some of the winning representatives.

In addition to the two academicians, other people on the list include Cao Weixing, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League, Fu Chengyu, former secretary of the party group and chairman of the board of directors of China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, Gao Xiqing, professor of the Red Sky Chair of the Law School of the University of International Business and Economics, Li Yansong, president of Shanghai University of Foreign Chinese, Wang Huiyao, founder and chairman of the Globalization Think Tank, Xiong Sidong, president of Soochow University, Yang Lan, chairman of Sunshine Media Group, and Yu Minhong, chairman of New Oriental Education and Technology Group.

Mr. Shi, 54, said he spent his first 18 years studying in China, and in the next 36 years, he spent almost half of his time in the United States and half of his time in China. The biggest impact of his study abroad experience is to make him see the world more peacefully, to look at each other more objectively, "We are on the same earth, in the same world, although we have different cultures, backgrounds, and races, but in the end we coexist." ”

The 63-year-old took the TOEFL exam at what was then Shanghai Overseas Chinese College in 1983. He also remembers that he scored 580 points, which was a relatively high score that year. It was precisely because of the TOEFL test that he was able to go to the United States to study for a doctorate, received systematic academic training, understood American society, and played an important role in his life growth and maturity.

In 1981, ETS (American Educational Testing Service) signed an agreement with the Chinese Ministry of Education, toefl became the first international standard language test to be introduced into the Chinese mainland, and the GRE (American Graduate School Entrance Examination) entered China in the same year. Xu Yongji, deputy director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchange of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, said that this move has opened a precedent for Sino-foreign cooperation in holding educational examinations. The TOEFL and GRE tests have become household names, and the "TOEFL story" of tens of millions of international students has become a good story of Sino-foreign educational exchanges and cooperation. Practice has proved that Sino-US educational exchanges and cooperation are mutually beneficial and win-win, with lasting momentum and strong resilience. (End)
