What is Central Retinal Artery Occlusion?
Central retinal artery occlusion, also known as "eye stroke", is when the central retinal artery is partially or completely blocked. The retina is like a film negative for a camera, which converts the light that shines into the eye into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve so that we can "see" the things around us.
The retina is extremely sensitive to local hypoxia, and fresh arterial blood cannot enter and nourish the retina, resulting in a painless, sudden loss or loss of vision. This vision loss does not go away after a short rest.
What triggers an "eye stroke"?
Central retinal artery occlusion is more common in older people. Its occurrence is closely related to systemic diseases such as hypertension, carotid artery occlusion, diabetes, heart valve disease, etc. The elasticity of blood vessels in the elderly is reduced, the tube wall is hardened, and the elderly often have various underlying diseases, which can easily suffer from "eye stroke".
In addition to age, there are many factors that are closely related to the onset of central retinal artery occlusion.

High blood pressure can lead to damage to the endothelium of blood vessels, and the plaque formed will rupture and fall off in the blood vessels, which may block the retinal blood vessels and cause "eye stroke".

How can I help myself and treat myself?
1. Sudden loss of vision in one eye, vision disappears immediately or within a few minutes, and only the number of fingers or light perception can be seen.
2. Some patients have had a transient amaurosis (i.e., temporary loss of vision, usually about 1-2 minutes), which can be relieved after a few minutes.
3. After several repeated episodes, the patient will suddenly have severe vision loss. In most eyes, vision decreases to the front of the eyes by hand or counting fingers.
Some patients have a history of stroke or have a transient ischemic lesion. When the above symptoms of "eye stroke" appear, even if the symptoms of blurred vision are temporarily relieved, do not hesitate to go to the hospital immediately.
As an ophthalmic emergency, the irreversible damage to the retinal photoreceptor tissue mostly occurs after retinal ischemia and hypoxia is greater than 90 minutes, and 90 minutes is the golden treatment time for central retinal artery occlusion. The duration of the platinum treatment is 6 hours, preferably no more than 24 hours.
Before arriving at the hospital, you can immediately carry out some self-help measures, such as massaging the eyeballs with your fingers, compression massage for 10 seconds, suddenly releasing your fingers for 5 seconds, and so on for about 10 times, each massage for 15 minutes, to increase the perfusion of retinal blood vessels, or patients with conditions can also take nitroglycerin tablets under the tongue. Then rush to the nearest hospital for emergency ophthalmology treatment as soon as possible.
