Chinanews.com, Shanghai News, May 18 (Reporter Fan Yubin) The 2024 "Future Xiangjiang" STEAM (representing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) education group organized by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Education Alliance was held in Shanghai from 15 to 19, with more than 40 Hong Kong primary and secondary school principals and STEAM education teachers participating in a series of visits and training courses. The purpose of this workshop is to train STEAM education teaching talents in primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, promote exchanges and interactions between the education sectors of Shanghai and Hong Kong, and build a bridge for STEAM education exchanges between the two places.

How can fiction fit into STEAM education? How was the domestic large aircraft C919 born? On the 17th, the Hong Kong Alliance for Science and Technology Innovation Education and the School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University held an opening ceremony to launch the teacher training course. The study group visited COMAC, watched the birth process of the domestic large aircraft C919 up close, and visited the Shanghai Experimental School (Secondary School).

Hong Kong teachers said in interviews that they realized that Shanghai's implementation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education has reached out to families and communities to form good interactions, which is worthy of reference for Hong Kong schools.

Wu Huanjie, vice chairman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Education Alliance, said that it is better to travel thousands of miles than to read 10,000 books. As Hong Kong primary and secondary schools are less likely to promote STEAM education based on engineering knowledge, this workshop provides Hong Kong teachers with more perspectives to explore the possibilities of various combinations of STEAM education, which is conducive to training STEAM education teaching talents in Hong Kong primary and secondary schools. "We hope to continue to work with the School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University to increase exchanges between the education sectors of Shanghai and Hong Kong."

Wang Linyuan, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, said that the Future Education Research Center of the School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is guided by the practical needs of deepening education reform, focusing on STEAM interdisciplinary curriculum design, empowering the cultivation of new talents with strong scientific research, and creating excellent teachers for the future. It is hoped that the School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Hong Kong Alliance for Science, Technology and Innovation Education will work together to explore exchanges and cooperation in more fields and contribute to the construction of a strong country in education.

Jiang Fengguang, deputy dean of the School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, gave a lecture on "Practice and Research of STEM Education: From Local to International Cooperation", taking Zheng He's trip to the West as a teaching case, allowing the members to make models and solve various problems that may arise in navigation.

On the same day, the delegation visited COMAC Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd. to visit the interior cabins and aircraft assembly workshops of different types of aircraft. In order to gain an in-depth understanding of the implementation of STEM education in Shanghai schools, the delegation visited Shanghai Experimental Middle School (Secondary Division) to visit STEM education-related equipment and classrooms, and participate in experimental activities.

Liu Weibin, a member teacher of the study group, said that he was deeply touched by the visit arranged by the study group, and realized that Shanghai's STEM curriculum pays more attention to interdisciplinary integration, establishes in-depth and lasting cooperation with enterprises, allows students to directly participate in the development of practical projects, and integrates into families and communities, forming a good education ecology.

Xie Minluo, a teacher from Fujian Secondary School in Hong Kong, said that inspired by this workshop, teachers should respect and encourage students to think independently in the classroom design and teaching process of STEM education, so that students can try and innovate more. In practice, teachers should cooperate with design thinking and problem-solving processes to cultivate students' awareness of independent learning and collaborative problem-solving. (ENDS)
