Forcing Chinese tourists to shop! A travel agency in South Korea was fined!

South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said on the 15th that a South Korean travel agency has been suspended for rectification and other punishments for forcing Chinese group tourists to shop.

According to a statement released on the official website of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea, the travel agency attracted Chinese group tourists at unreasonably low prices and forced tourists to shop. The statement did not mention the name of the travel agency.

A Chinese tourist who used the travel agency's services reported to the complaint center in February that the tour guide was forced to make a purchase, the statement said. During the investigation, the Korea Travel Association found that this was indeed the case, so it imposed a penalty of 30 days on the travel agency involved. A follow-up investigation found that the travel agency had repeatedly "outsourced" duty-free shopping to a non-designated travel agency. On the 14th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism instructed the travel agency to suspend business for rectification and cancel its qualification to receive Chinese group tours.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this is the first time that the South Korean government has imposed administrative penalties on a travel agency for violations since 2016, when it established penalties for disrupting the order of the tourism industry.

An official from South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that in the first quarter of this year, about 3.4 million tourists came to South Korea, of which Chinese tourists had the largest number, reaching 1.01 million, ranking first in the number of foreign tourists returning to South Korea. In order to support the healthy growth of the Chinese group tour market to South Korea, the South Korean side will strengthen the investigation and handling of behaviors that disrupt the market order, and strive to improve the satisfaction of tourists.
