Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said in an interview with the Tribune that India will soon begin construction of a third aircraft carrier, and in the future the fifth and sixth will be built, and will switch from conventionally powered aircraft carriers to nuclear power.
The news that India wants to build an aircraft carrier on a "large scale" has already sparked a heated discussion on X, and Indian netizens said that they should not slip on the deck, but must go on the electromagnetic catapult! American netizens have left messages saying that India has been seriously stimulated by China's Fujian ship, not to mention whether a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier can be built, where to find India's electromagnetic catapult? It's impossible to buy from the Chinese!
ridiculed by netizens around the world! Stimulated by the Fujian ship: India announced the construction of 3 more aircraft carriers!
According to the Indian "Tribune", Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced in an interview with the "Tribune" that he would build the fifth and sixth ships, Rajnath said, "We will not stop here (three aircraft carriers), we will continue to build five, six or even more." ”
At present, India has two aircraft carriers in service, namely Vikramaditya (from Russia) and Vikrant (domestic in India), and the construction of India's third aircraft carrier (IAC-3: Vishal) has been put on the agenda, and the construction of the third aircraft carrier will be carried out soon.
The rhetoric of the Indian defense minister has been sought after by Indian netizens, and some netizens said that India will become the third largest economy in the next ten years, with a GDP of more than 10 trillion US dollars, and money is not a thing, China has already built 10 electromagnetic catapult aircraft carriers around 2040, can't India build it? Not only to build, but also to build nuclear-powered aircraft carriers!
For India to build 5-6 aircraft carriers, netizens on well-known foreign social media X have something to say, these netizens from all over the world are mainly divided into two factions, support and ridicule, the former is mainly Indian netizens are very excited, they all think that India is a global power, must be equipped with multiple aircraft carriers, and the mockers have said that India is a two jujubes, and want to learn from China to build so many aircraft carriers? Don't pee on yourself?
Tweeted to the famous Chinese weapons fan, the German "Twitter Minions" were the first to stand up and mock India, saying it's always healthy to start the day with a happy smile:
At the bottom of this post, the followers were very enthusiastic, including an Indian netizen who had a bar with him, and he had to make the "Minions" admit that India was worthy of these 5-6 aircraft carriers, and his reason was as follows:
"India will soon become the third largest economy, with a GDP of more than $10 trillion in ten years, and we have already decided to build conventionally powered aircraft carriers, and in the future, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers"
Minion's answer: "From the perspective of India's overall economic scale, this is really no problem, but the situation in India is different from China, if India really plans to build 5-6 aircraft carriers, then from now on it must invest in planning infrastructure, because building aircraft carriers is a very large system engineering, compare with the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai and the Cochin Shipyard in India."
Comments: India's GDP can indeed support 5-6 aircraft carriers, but now is India's primitive accumulation period, India's blind toss will affect economic development, in addition, India's economic scale is only large, but the high-end manufacturing industry is very primitive, India has just begun, just like China's GDP scale is not small when the reform and opening up, but there is no way to build aircraft carriers, which is the problem of backward high-end manufacturing.
Netizen A interjected: India's economy has indeed developed, but this is the efforts of 1.5 billion people, 4 times that of the United States, 80% of the population is extremely poor, and they need relief to live, and it is shameful to say that India is an economic power! (This netizen is Indian and has blackened himself)
Indian netizens: "Such a comparison is very unfair to India, ten years ago China was not capable, but ten years later China already has an electromagnetic catapult aircraft carrier!" Twenty years ago, India was ranked 16th in terms of GDP, and now it is ranked fifth in terms of GDP, and although we have how poor we are, we are getting better every year."
Minion: "It's really unfair to India, just like in 2008, you didn't expect China to equip an electromagnetic catapult aircraft carrier in 2024, but the question is whether India has such a long-term plan and continues to work on it?" ”
Indian netizen: "India has started to develop, the technical demonstration of EMALS has been successful, it will be scaled up and applied to aircraft carriers, we also have a land-based STOBAR (interdiction) facility, it was built a year ago, things will change, India is in the period of China ten years ago".
"This is the development of the Indian Navy and efforts are underway to localize engines, including gas turbines and diesel engines, and more and more shipyards are getting orders for heavy ships, from patrol boats in the past to corvettes now, it will take a process, but it is a good start"
Netizen B interjected and reminded: "Patrol ships and frigates can be slightly modified, but the aircraft carrier is huge, unlike a 6,000-ton destroyer, which needs to have a strong industrial background to build"
Indian netizens: "India has built an aircraft carrier, and then just copy this model to build a second and third one, India already has the ability to design nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers, and India has a strong industrial base"
Minions: "Building an aircraft carrier is far more than just a shipyard, but also a manufacturing ecosystem, especially for CATOBAR/EMALS (electromagnetic catapult) aircraft carriers, if you see that China can build electromagnetic catapults and think that India can build them, then where is India's EM/EW land-based test facility?" Not to mention airplanes".
Indian netizen: "India has enough technology and industrial technology to expand the size of its fleet, but it is still too far behind China, and even the United States cannot compete with China"
Comments: This Indian netizen is not a brain-dead fan in everyone's impression, but a very logical analysis of the current situation in India, and the Minions pointed out India's shortcomings, the foundation is too weak, the industrial scale is too small, and the manufacturing level is too low, although an aircraft carrier has been built now, but the steel plate technology, engines and carrier-based aircraft on the aircraft carrier deck are all imported, and the Indians regard the ability to assemble this imported equipment as their own independent construction ability, which is an illusion!
The semi-finished product was launched
This Indian netizen may not know how many times the aircraft carrier Vikrant has been launched? I don't know the standard of China's domestic aircraft carriers, and the national production of key equipment and technology is considered domestic, because military equipment is different from civilian equipment, and now China is under comprehensive sanctions from the United States or cannot obtain equipment that India can easily obtain, India's so-called domestic fighter jets are not even domestic engines, radars, ejection seats, etc., as for electromagnetic catapults, it is really a model, and the following flower growers will have a lot of space to cover.
Netizen C reminded: "Minions, you are in big trouble, you have offended India"
Netizen D reminded: "Minion, you have to delete the post again and apologize"
This is a famous Chinese military equipment fan Minion on Twitter, who has been to the scene many times during the Zhuhai Air Show, and is very interested in Chinese weapons and equipment, most of the tweets on social media X are about Chinese weapons, and he used to often scold Indian netizens, and it is estimated that he has provoked Indian netizens and was collectively reported and apologized. The Minions are also talking about the truth about India, which everyone can see, but if you say this about India on X, you will definitely be scolded to death by the Indians.
In another post, there is not so much rational discussion, and all parties are basically scolding the war one:
- Indian netizens (different from the above): It must be an electromagnetic catapult, not a slip on the deck;
- Netizens from other countries: One Indian year is equal to five earth years, and we will look at it in 100 years;
- Chinese netizen A: Indians are the world's first in telling jokes;
- Chinese netizen B: Learn to walk before running;
- Chinese netizen C: India's aircraft carrier burns cow dung? Is it necessary to hang a motorcycle trapeze on the aircraft carrier?
- Chinese netizen D: Indians are stimulated by China's Fujian ship, and China can also go to India!
- Indian netizen: India can't even build LM2500 (universal gas turbine), and still wants to build a nuclear reactor?
- Netizens from other countries: What nuclear power is used for 4-50,000 tons of garbage? (French Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier lying gun)
- Netizens from other countries: Indians should invest more money in garbage disposal, instead of blindly launching an arms race nuclear China comparison;
In fact, there are a lot of messages, and the flower planters will not be summarized one by one, in a word, Indian netizens are very rational, and there are also netizens who completely ignore the reality of India, netizens from other countries, there are insults and ridicules, Chinese netizens are all poisonous tongues, and one sentence can say that people can't breathe.
So the question is, is it possible for India to build so many aircraft carriers, and also to use nuclear power and electromagnetic catapults?
Indian aircraft carriers: where are the electric bombs? Where are the carrier-based aircraft? Where is the nuclear power?
India's ability to build aircraft carriers has been seen by everyone, although the Vikrant aircraft carrier was built from 2008 to 2022 and was not put into service until 2022, a total of 14 years of construction, compared to China's 003 aircraft carrier Fujian ship in 2016 The construction is a bit long, and many of the shipboard equipment are not domestic, such as the engine is four LM2500 gas turbines provided by General Motors, many weapon systems, including design, are from abroad, and the deck special steel is also all imported from Russia, Carrier-based aircraft are also from France.
In addition, there were many problems in the construction process, such as the design of the gearbox propulsion shaft in 2011, and the diesel generator also had problems with various technical problems encountered in the construction process, which was postponed many times and launched three times, which is also a wonder in the history of world shipbuilding, but one thing is certain, India already has the technology to build aircraft carriers, and we don't care how long they have built it.
The technology for building aircraft carriers is there: what about electromagnetic catapults?
India has two choices, one is to buy, the other is self-developed, only China and the United States can independently design and build electromagnetic catapult and interception, France is purchased from the United States, it is said that the cost is as high as 1.3 billion US dollars, which is equivalent to the cost of a 055 drive, this price is really black enough, this is still the use of medium voltage AC defective catapult! But France won't, it can only buy American. China will definitely not sell to India, and India is not at ease, so India will either grit its teeth and buy the American one, or develop it itself!
Judging from the results published so far, India tends to develop its own products
At the end of September 2023, the scaled model and schematic diagram of India's "domestic" electromagnetic catapult appeared on foreign social media, one is the top view above, and the other is the structural diagram below, showing that the number of cables is very large, and the wire diameter is relatively thick, and its principle should be the universal reconnection coil launcher for electromagnetic catapult.
Indian netizens also think that many Indian netizens are cheering on the Indian Defense Forum, it seems that this electromagnetic catapult is so simple, build a model, and then scale it up in equal proportions after the test is OK, but everyone knows that this is impossible, because the electromagnetic catapult needs to accelerate the 40-ton heavy fighter to takeoff in another 2~3 seconds, and its power is unimaginable, otherwise the US military will spend more than a billion dollars on research and development? The French spent a billion dollars to buy an electromagnetic catapult? When I searched for information, I also found an interesting fact that India's electric bomb technology may have come from the United States:
- 1. In 2013, General Atomics, the developer of EMALS (Electromagnetic Catapult System), also introduced the technology to Indian naval officers with the permission of the U.S. government.
- 2. In 2015, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense for Procurement and Safeguards Frank Kendall said that the Obama administration supported the sale of electromagnetic catapult systems and other technologies to India.
- 3. In October 2017, before U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited India, the Trump administration approved the release of Vishal electromagnetic catapult system technology.
- 4. In April 2022, India's state-owned BHEL signed a memorandum of understanding with GE Power Conversion to enhance the Indian Navy's indigenous capabilities to develop integrated all-electric propulsion systems (IFEPs), including systems for planned aircraft carriers.
From this point of view, India's electric bomb technology is also bought, it will save trouble, there will definitely be the problem of high failure rate of the medium-voltage AC mechanism on the Ford electric bomb, and it is also possible that several electromagnetic catapults on an aircraft carrier will be paralyzed at the same time, after all, the Ford has been demonstrated to the world in June 2020.
If you buy it, there will be no problem, as long as the Americans deliver it on time, the Indians will install it on the aircraft carrier, and then let the Americans provide technical support when debugging the ejection. As for the electromagnetic blockage, it doesn't matter, after all, it doesn't have to be an electromagnetic blocker, such as hydraulic damping blockage can also be used, there is no need to do any empty electromagnetic blockade, right, so the electromagnetic catapult of the Indians seems to have some eyebrows, and they don't want to have nothing as everyone thinks, but people can buy it, and you can only bitter the word in China!
Carrier-based aircraft: The Indians themselves are actually not good
The carrier-based aircraft of the Vikrant aircraft carrier are MiG-29 and French Rafale, and there is no Indian's own LCA fighter, but everyone knows that LCA has a carrier-based version, but the Indian Navy did not choose its own carrier-based aircraft at all, because this carrier-based aircraft actually had to take off in the longest heavy-load take-off position to make the LCA fighter take off empty, what else is this playing?
The reason is that the lift-to-drag ratio of the wing of India's domestic LCA fighter is too small, and it takes a long distance to run to have enough lift, and another fatal problem is the lack of structural strength. The then Chief of Staff of the Indian Navy (CNS), Admiral Sunil Lamba, put it this way:
"The carrier-based version of the Tejas currently does not meet the quality requirements (QR) as a naval carrier-based aircraft, the weight of the fighter is too heavy for the engine equipped, and it does not meet the weight-thrust ratio requirements to be able to take off with a full load of weapons."
As early as 2016, Admiral Sunil Lamba said that the fuselage and landing gear of the carrier-based version of the Tejas fighter have the problem of insufficient strength, and when taking off when full of fuel and ammunition, not only the power of the engine is insufficient, the take-off distance is too long, and the longest take-off distance of the aircraft carrier deck is also difficult to leave the aircraft carrier, and the strength of the fuselage is also very problematic.
At present, only the Russian MiG-29 or the French Rafale can be used, which is the standard carrier-based aircraft on the current Indian aircraft carrier, and the Indians want to have their own carrier-based aircraft, it is estimated that it will take several decades!
What about nuclear reactors? Does India have one?
The answer is really yes, the "Enemy Destroyer" nuclear submarine launched in 2009 used an 83 MW CLWR-B1 compact nuclear reactor, but according to the data, this is Russian technology, and only equivalent to the level of the American or Soviet Navy in the 60s, such as OK-150 or S5W reactors.
Regardless of the technical level, the Indians at least have, referring to the French's gameplay, using two Areva K15 pressurized water reactors (originally reactors for nuclear submarines), each with an output of 150MW, about 300 megawatts of power. And this is only thermal power, the general electrical power is only about 1/3, that is, 100 megawatts! If the Indians want to achieve the same power as Charles de Gaulle with the CLWR-B1, then at least 4 units are needed, which is not impossible, but the logistical maintenance will definitely collapse!
To sum up, there is really no obvious bottleneck in these key technologies of the Indian aircraft carrier, but the engineering capabilities of the Indians are still not very good, and the supporting subsystems are lackluster, of course, it doesn't matter, India is the only country that can buy good things from both the United States and Russia at the same time.
