In April, the memorial hall of the former site of the Central Special Science Agency, located in an old house on Wuding Road in Jing'an District, was opened. The venue is open to individual visitors free of charge and without reservations, and citizens and history lovers can easily visit the exhibition, stroll through the old houses, and learn about the struggle of the Central Special Branch, the first relatively mature intelligence and security agency of the Communist Party of China, in Shanghai.
The two-storey building where the memorial hall is located is a new-style lane house with a construction area of 290 square meters, an attic at the top, a mixed brick and wood structure, and an exterior wall made of clear water red bricks. The floor plan of the building is compact, the functional arrangement is reasonable, and the courtyard and patio are partially set up for ventilation and lighting. In April 2014, the old house was announced by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government as a cultural relics protection unit in Shanghai. In 2021, in line with the principle of repairing the old as the old, after demolishing the additional parts of the previous years, the old house was restored to its original historical appearance and repaired, and the exhibition was arranged after the renovation was completed. On May 1, Century Park in Pudong New Area, known as "Shanghai's Central Park", announced that it would be open 24 hours a day. In 1907 (the 33rd year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty), Zhou Bangjun, a physician of Shanghai Chinese and Western Pharmacy, referred to the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" and used rose, jasmine flavor and alcohol to blend star flower water. At that time, foreign goods were rampant, and the national capitalists rose up together to pursue "industry to save the country". As one of the representative enterprises of national industry and commerce, Shanghai Star Perfume Factory came into being. After improving the formula, the efficacy and fragrance of the star flower water were improved, and the bold use of dark green glass bottles and the image of a little girl in a pink ballet dress in the advertisement made the product an instant hit. The historical output of star toilet water exceeded 10 million bottles, which was the largest domestic perfume sales in the early 20th century, and was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. In 1929, Zhou Bangjun's eldest daughter, Zhou Wenji, took the helm of the Star Perfume Factory, which had thousands of employees in its heyday. The predecessor of Shanghai Household Chemicals Factory (Shanghai Jahwa) is the Star Perfume Factory.
The former site of Star Perfume Factory, No. 177 Gaoyang Road, Hongkou District, is located in the southwest of the intersection of Gaoyang Road, East Changzhi Road. The old building was built in the early 20th century (built in the 1900s), is a three-story brick and wood structure, with a construction area of 1,062 square meters, with the characteristics of modern Shanghai industrial architectural style. Historically, the building was the second factory of star perfumes, and after renovation, it is now the exhibition hall of the Shanghai China Central Place project. The building retains mottled bricks with lettering and dark red wooden floors. The gallery on the second floor is open to the public, and admission is free after making an online reservation. The current exhibition is Huang Wei's solo exhibition "Tempering", which will end on May 21. It is understood that the space will regularly hold exhibitions, salons and other activities.
