Touch the width of the city
The exhibition is organized by the Guangzhou Federation of Social Sciences, the Guangzhou Yuexiu District Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau, and the Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology (the Museum of the Second Tombs of the Southern Han Dynasty), undertaken by the Yuexiu District Museum, and supported by the Nanyue King Museum (the Western Han Dynasty Nanyue National History Research Center).
The exhibition showcases the archaeological discoveries and conservation achievements of Guangzhou's urban defense system from ancient times to modern times, highlighting the important position of Guangzhou as the "southern gate" of China since ancient times, and the positive role it has played in defending southern Xinjiang, which is of great significance for enhancing the historical and cultural identity and national identity of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

For the first time, a comprehensive exhibition of the period from antiquity to modern times
Archaeological discovery and protection results of Guangzhou's urban defense system
The defense system of ancient cities is an important part of urban construction, which provides security for the city and forms the basis for the long-term development of the region, while the expansion and development of the city promotes the continuous improvement and consolidation of the city's defense system, and the two complement each other and promote each other.
According to the archaeological investigation of the cultural relics and archaeology department for more than 40 years, there are about 30 related urban defense historical sites such as city walls, Haoyong, and forts that have been preserved in Guangzhou, which have the characteristics of wide range and many categories, and are the best historical witness of the city's development and evolution and the shape and layout of defense facilities for more than 2,000 years. Therefore, understanding the development and changes of Guangzhou's urban defense system can produce a more comprehensive historical understanding of the rich connotation of Guangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city.
This exhibition collects and displays the documents and archaeological discoveries related to the urban defense of Guangzhou from ancient times to modern times, gathers and displays 98 pieces/sets of cultural relics unearthed from the historical sites of urban defense, and about 20 archaeological excavation project materials of the historical sites of urban defense, through the content of the three parts of "The Rise of Guangzhou City", "Guangzhou Urban Defense Construction" and "Protection and Utilization", presents the whole process of the development and change of Guangzhou's urban defense system in a multi-faceted and multi-dimensional manner, and actively promotes the protection and utilization of cultural relics in the new era to advance with the times and share with the people.

Vivid presentation of Guangzhou for more than 2,200 years

For more than 2,000 years, Guangzhou City has always been the political, economic and cultural center of Lingnan, and "the city site has not been moved, the center has not changed" is a significant feature of the development of this national historical and cultural city for more than 2,200 years, and the "center" of Guangzhou City has never deviated from the jurisdiction of Yuexiu today.
On the one hand, the exhibition will show the public how archaeological staff can gradually restore the historical site and trace the growth trajectory of the city site through scientific methods and technical means through archaeological discoveries.
On the other hand, Yuexiu, which has always been in the central position of the city, has opened the origin of the city, accepted the baptism of time, and witnessed the perseverance of the ancestors.

The only one of its kind found so far is on display
Iron cannon associated with the Nanming regime in Guangzhou
Historically, Guangzhou is known as the ancient city of the Three Dynasties, including the Southern Ming Dynasty regime that took Guangzhou as the national capital in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. In August 2019, when the First Hospital of Guangzhou was carrying out renovation work, an iron cannon was found in the northeast side of the Ming city wall, which was discovered in 2014, and an iron cannon was found in the area near the city wall, and the inscription of the iron cannon had information such as "Hongguang first year (1645)". After on-site investigation and expert research, the iron cannon caster "political envoy Yan" was Yan Qing, who served as the secretary of the Guangdong Salt Law Road from 1641 to 1646.
The number of inscriptions on the iron cannon is large, the pattern is complicated, it is not only a rare fine product in the existing Nanming iron cannon, but also the only iron cannon related to the Nanming regime in Guangzhou found so far, which has high historical and cultural value.
In the early stage, after the cultural relics restoration experts' cultural relics protection measures such as rust removal, desalination, corrosion inhibition, and sealing, the restored iron cannon reappeared exquisite ornaments and inscriptions, and was exhibited to the public in this "Gongwei Guangzhou - Guangzhou City Defense Historical Sites Exhibition".

Measure the thickness of culture
On the day of the event, the organizers jointly released a new Yuexiu tourism route of "following the footsteps of the sages of southern Guangdong orienteering". With the theme of "Millennium History Runhua City, Yuexiu Cultural Museum Rejuvenated", the route combines multiple elements of "Cultural Museum + Tourism + Research" to innovate the new gameplay of cultural tourism and cultural museum.
After the release of the route, it will be open to all primary and secondary school students in Yuexiu District, and it is planned to carry out two public welfare research activities on May 18, Museum Day, and one free public welfare session will be held every month in the future.
The young students participating in the activity will go to various cultural and cultural tourism attractions in Yuexiu to conduct "treasure hunting" in the form of orienteering and script killing, unlock the "new experience" of Yuexiu cultural tourism, measure the thickness of Guangzhou's urban history and culture with their footsteps, and realize the "double improvement" of spiritual and cultural literacy and physical motor function.

During the International Museum Day, the Yuexiu District Museum will continue to create and provide high-quality museum education "golden courses" in conjunction with the exhibition of "Gongwei Guangzhou: Guangzhou Urban Defense Historical Sites", and launch the "Exploring Yuexiu - Yuexiu Research City Walk" activity, which integrates "Museum Fever", "Archaeological Fever" and "Experiential Cultural Tourism", as well as the "Triple Gateway of Modern Guangzhou City" urban defense special lecture, leading the public to get close to the urban defense historical sites around them.

As an extension and dynamic supplement to the content of the "Gongwei Guangzhou - Guangzhou City Defense Historical Sites Exhibition", the first stop of the exploration will start from the Nanyue Sages Museum, and then archaeological enthusiasts will "visit the first scene of history" and enter the "Xiaoma Station - Liushuijing Ancient City Wall Ruins Archaeological Site" and "Nanyue National Wooden Sluice Ruins" and other urban defense historical sites, and deeply explore the urban context through the way of "watching and walking, learning while walking, and learning while learning".
