"This is a typical shale core, its grain size is finer than whetstone, the reservoir is dense, and it is extremely difficult to develop, known as the 'whetstone of whetstones', and shale oil is hidden in it." On May 14, in the core bank of the Tuha Oilfield Exploration and Development Research Institute, Zhang Jun, the project manager of fine reservoir description, held a piece of core and introduced the mystery of tight oil to the scientific researchers present.

Shale oil is more difficult to develop than conventional sandstone, as it is stored in shale pores and fractures. How to 'squeeze' oil out of the 'stone cracks' is a topic that reservoir geology researchers at this research institute are studying.

In the face of new fields and new reservoir types, reservoir geology researchers have changed their thinking, made bold innovations, determined research topics, and worked together to overcome bottlenecks. They have adapted measures to local conditions, and strengthened basic theoretical research and geological understanding with "one district and one policy". Every time a new core data is transported back from the production line in Zhundong hundreds of kilometers away, they will rush to the scene as soon as possible, hold an "on-site Zhuge meeting", look for oil and gas "passwords" from a piece of cold and hard core, see the small and see the big, grasp the first-hand information, and further accurately describe the structure, caprock, reservoir, oil, and water characteristics of oil-bearing traps, so as to provide more accurate parameters for oil and gas exploration and development in the Zhundong New Area, and strive to unveil the mystery of shale oil reservoirs as soon as possible, and finally realize the economic development of shale oil.

In the core library of the research institute, the cores from the exploration wells of Qi 2, Hongqi 3303, Ji 2801 and other exploration wells in Zhundong New Area are neatly arranged, as if they are welcoming the review of scientific researchers. Yan Bo, a scientific researcher who had just joined the work, pointed to a piece of core in the Ji 2801 well and asked the master next to him for advice: "This black mudstone can smell a strong smell of oil and asphalt, does it come from the oil-bearing layer?" ”

"In shale oil reservoirs, the black mudstone is oil-born, so it smells of oil and asphalt. It does not come from a reservoir, which is what we commonly call an oil layer. Project manager Li Ning replied briefly.

"Yes, the black mudstone in the source rock also has oil and gas fluorescence. In shale oil reservoirs, the search for black shale is critical. Come and see, there are algae plants and shells in this black mudstone! When these tiny organisms die, they form large amounts of organic matter. When sediment particles settle into lakes, they are buried and preserved together with these organic matter under suitable conditions, forming organic shale ......" Fu Zhanhua, a master with deep knowledge of geological theory, told about the past and present life of shale oil.

We carefully observed block by block, and had an intuitive understanding of the shale oil core from the aspects of color, texture, bedding, and fractures.

In this research institute, we all have a good tradition of carrying out the "first lesson of entering the factory" for new scientific researchers, or carrying out research on key topics, that is, to go to the site of the core library, intuitively view and analyze the characteristics of the core, start from the basic physical object, study and master the first-hand information, and work together to tackle key technical problems in view of bottlenecks and difficulties.

The core bank has now become the "first classroom" for newly recruited scientific researchers of Tuha Oilfield Exploration and Development Research Institute, and it is also an important position for the majority of scientific research workers to combine theory with practice and innovate to solve problems.
