BYD pickup is finally here!

On May 14, BYD's first pickup truck, BYD SHARK, was officially launched in Mexico.

The new car is positioned as a new energy luxury smart pickup, and the price is not low, with a price of 969,800 Mexican pesos (equivalent to about 416,000 yuan).

In February this year, BYD announced that it expected to build a factory in Mexico by the end of the year. The cost of building the plant could be around $600 million, similar to the cost of BYD's electric vehicle plant in Brazil, which will have a capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year.

"Pickup version" Leopard 5?

The length, width and height of the BYD SHARK are 5457×1971×1925mm, and the wheelbase is 3260mm. The new car is available in GL and GS versions, and is available in three different exterior colours: white, black and grey.

In terms of appearance, the car adopts the classic style of American pickup, with a large grille and BYD brand logo, and a C-shaped headlight group and a through-type light strip, which is full of science and technology. There is also a silver scuff guard underneath. The car will also be equipped with 18-inch GitiXross HT71 tires from Giti, in keeping with the Formula Leopard 5.

From the side, the body line is straight, the ground clearance is high, and the slightly raised wheel arches and petal-style wheels make the whole car look very tough. It is also equipped with a roof rack and gantry. At the rear, vertical taillights and a continuous light strip echo the front design.

In terms of interior, the new car is completely black, equipped with a multi-function steering wheel, a 10.25-inch LCD screen instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch central control screen, and a large number of physical buttons are also retained in the gear lever area.

In terms of intelligence, BYD SHARK is equipped with a large rotatable central control screen, equipped with in-car voice control, remote management of the vehicle, NFC digital key, W-HUD head-up display, 540-degree ultra-wide-angle panoramic camera and other functions, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making driving more convenient and safer.

LIKE THE FORMULA LEOPARD LEOPARD 5, THE BYD SHARK IS ALSO BUILT ON THE BYD DMO SUPER HYBRID OFF-ROAD PLATFORM, WHICH IS A PLUG-IN HYBRID.

The DMO platform is a groundbreaking integration of a new hybrid non-load-bearing architecture, the world's first longitudinal EHS drive assembly, CTC battery-chassis integration technology, front and rear double wishbone independent suspension, and pickup-specific rear-wheel drive assembly. Ensure that the vehicle not only has the performance and safety of hard-core off-road, but also has the comfort and low energy consumption comparable to that of an SUV.

In terms of power, the BYD SHARK has a maximum power output of more than 430 horsepower, and the acceleration time from 000 km/h is only 5.7 seconds, far exceeding that of fuel pickup trucks in the same class. As a super hybrid model, the BYD SHARK achieves ultra-long range with both gasoline and electric power modes. It has a combined range of 840 km under NEDC mode and 100 km of pure electric range, making it easy to commute and travel long distances in the city.

At the same time, the BEED SHARK NEDC has a combined fuel consumption of 7.5L/100km, which can achieve 40% fuel saving even when feeding compared to fuel pickups of the same class.

Li Ke, Executive Vice President of BYD and President of BYD Americas, said at the press conference that BYD SHARK will subvert the traditional fuel pickup truck market with super technology, and bring users a lifestyle with infinite possibilities through humanized design, DMO technology and intelligent experience. BYD will officially open the era of global new energy pickup trucks.

BYD's new energy vehicles have covered more than 80 countries and regions such as Japan, Germany, Australia, and Brazil. BYD SHARK will be sold in the Americas, Australia and other places in the future, but whether it will be launched in China, there is no official explanation for the time being.

Why publish in Mexico

At present, pickup trucks in the domestic market are still niche models, and the sales volume of new energy pickup trucks in China in 2023 will be 7,499 units, a year-on-year increase of 197%, but the penetration rate of new energy pickup trucks is only 2.24%, which is much lower than that of new energy passenger vehicles.

Although the current Chinese pickup truck market is in an upward stage, there are still some restrictive policy impacts, such as the incomplete lifting of the ban on pickup trucks in some areas, mandatory scrapping, and annual inspection. In addition, pickup trucks are larger, not easy to park, and do not have an advantage in daily commuting, so the market for pickup trucks is more not in cities but in towns, and BYD SHARK, which has more than 400,000 yuan, is obviously not the first choice for this part of the group.

In addition, Chinese people generally believe that pickup trucks are a kind of trucks, and the application scenarios are framed in cargo transportation, etc., which is not suitable for life travel. This makes the market share of the already not rich even narrower, let alone compete with ordinary models.

Moreover, the pattern of the domestic pickup truck market has always been very stable, Great Wall Motors is the big brother, with a market share of about 50% in 2023, followed by Jiangling Motors, SAIC Maxus, Zhengzhou Nissan, Jiangxi Isuzu and other brands, showing a situation of "one super and many strong". It is not easy for BYD SHARK, which is positioned as a luxury plug-in hybrid, to squeeze in and get a piece of the pie.

However, looking at the overseas market, in 2023, the total size of the global pickup truck market will be 5.68 million units, of which the overseas pickup truck market will reach 5.35 million units, and the domestic pickup truck market will be less than 330,000 units.

What's more, the current overseas market has lower requirements for pickup emission standards, mainly Euro 5 and below, while domestic pickup emission standards have entered the China 6b (RDE) stage. Under various convenient conditions, for many car companies such as JAC and Changan, overseas market sales have become an important part of pickup truck sales.

To sum up, it is a wise decision to choose to circumvent the domestic market and release BYD SHARK overseas.
