In order to raise the awareness of urban residents about water conservation, the Ministry of Construction of the People's Republic of China has designated the week of May 15 as the "National Urban Water Conservation Publicity Week" since 1992. The 2024 National Urban Water Conservation Awareness Week will be held from May 11 to 17, with the theme of "Promoting Urban Water Conservation and Building Beautiful Cities".
The average annual total water resources of the mainland for many years are about 2.7 trillion cubic meters of surface water resources, about 0.82 trillion cubic meters of groundwater resources, 0.72 trillion cubic meters of double counting, and about 2.8 trillion cubic meters of actual water resources, ranking sixth in the world.
Because the continent accounts for only 6% of the world's available water resources, but the population accounts for 1/5 of the world, the per capita freshwater resources are 2,200 cubic meters, only 1/4 of the world's per capita water, ranking 88th in the world, and is listed as one of the 13 countries with the poorest per capita water resources in the world.
