During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, there were two famous "pocket generals" (pocket think tanks) in the top echelons of the Kuomintang, namely Chiang Kai-shek's confidant Chen Cheng, and Chen Cheng's old subordinate Luo Zhuoying.
Both of them were known for their resourcefulness, and Luo Zhuoying served in the Kuomintang staff department for a long time.
During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Luo Zhuoying was also Chiang Kai-shek's most relied on general, and the Battle of Shanggao and the victory of Ren'anqiang led by him were the representative victories of the Nationalist army's resistance against Japan, and his command skills were also unanimously recognized by the Kuomintang.
But in the subsequent Liberation War, most of Luo Zhuoying's former subordinates became the commanders of the Kuomintang's corps, but he faded out of the front-line command post.
Although he also went to the front line during the Liaoshen Campaign, he did not intervene too much in the war, what is the reason behind this?
Some people think that after the outbreak of the Liberation War, Chiang Kai-shek needs to deal with intelligence on multiple battlefields at the same time, which is undoubtedly a huge challenge for him, so he must form a trustworthy and capable think tank.
However, in the course of the War of Liberation, Chiang Kai-shek had a large number of operational staff officers, among whom Du Yuming and others turned into "fire-fighting generals" after the War of Liberation entered the stage of glue-burning, leading troops to fight in various battlefields, except for Luo Zhuoying, which shows that the situation is probably not so simple.
The author believes that the real reason for Luo Zhuoying's fading out of the front-line command position is his attitude towards the Communist Party and his experience of cooperation with Communist Party members in the War of Resistance against Japan, which made Chiang Kai-shek unable to trust Luo Zhuoying 100%.
First of all, Luo Zhuoying's attitude towards the Communist Party was not the same as that of Chiang Kai-shek's cronies.
Luo Zhuoying, who was born in a family of eunuchs, had the idea of serving the country in the army at a very young age, and in the poems he wrote at the age of 20, he had the lofty ambition of "her husband remembers the events of his life and wants to capture Hu Yi in a war".
After joining the Kuomintang army, Luo Zhuoying never gave up the ideal of expelling the Tartars, which was especially evident after the full-scale outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan.
After the outbreak of the Lugou Bridge Incident, some generals within the Kuomintang had a pessimistic view of the prospects of the confrontation with Japan, but Luo Zhuoying felt that this was a good time to liquidate the hatred of the country and the family, and wrote a poem "Lugou Song":
Today, there is blood on the Lugou Bridge, rushing to the East China Sea and roaring waves.
The deep hatred is finally washed, and the sons and daughters of China are heroic.
In the early days of the Anti-Japanese War, the Chinese army was defeated on the battlefield one after another, but even so Luo Zhuoying still did not waver, and he was ready to sacrifice his life for the country, which can be glimpsed from his poem "Pingwu Song":
Men are as ambitious as mountains, and they can't wait to throw their heads.
It was reported that the battlefield was just right, and our army was fierce and stubborn.
It can be seen that General Luo Zhuoying is a patriotic general with a strong sense of family and country, so he has a very positive attitude towards Communist Party members in the War of Resistance against Japan, and anyone who can contribute to the resistance against Japan will be reused by him.
At that time, the magistrate of Shanggao County was Huang Xiandu, a special member of the Communist Party of China, who quickly rebuilt the local underground party organization after he went to Shanggao, and before the battle began, he had already set up two branches of the government and the school, and developed many party members.
These Communist Party members went deep among the local masses to carry out anti-Japanese ideological propaganda, which made the determination of the people in Shanggao to resist Japan unprecedentedly high.
Before the start of the battle, the Kuomintang received information that the Japanese army would send more than 40,000 people to attack Shanggao, and some generals had a cowardly mentality and wanted to retreat to Nanchang.
After the battle began, the local communists mobilized the masses to go to the front line to help the fighters transport food, weapons and ammunition, during the fiercest period of the battle, the daily support of the front crowd was about 4,000 people, and the entire Shanggao population was only 120,000, the local masses mobilized the strength is amazing.
In addition to the masses who support the logistics, other people are also helping the national army in their own way, Gao'an peasant Jin Youshui, after leading the way for our army, was captured by the enemy to lead the way, he brought the enemy army into the encirclement of our army and shouted that the enemy army is coming, and then died heroically.
Tu Changhong, a peasant in Jing'an, delivered information to the national army, was captured by the Japanese army on the way back, and he was tortured rather than give in, protecting the security of intelligence.
Xiong, a peasant in Shanggao, moved first and infiltrated the enemy's command post to steal information, and then he wrapped the intelligence documents in oiled paper and threw them into the river, letting them drift to the position of the Nationalist army, but he was arrested by the Japanese army and finally died heroically.
In addition to these heroes, the sacrifices of the people in front of the branch were not unbearable, when the Japanese planes and artillery covered the entire position with firepower, and the civilians who lacked military knowledge were often hit by shells, but they did not retreat, which moved the soldiers who fought a lot.
With the encouragement of the people, the officers and men of the national army in the battle of Shanggao fought bravely to be the first, and they used their flesh and blood to confront the enemy's tanks and planes head-on, and some companies even fought to the end with less than 30 people, but they never took a step back, and still actively charged the enemy's position, such morale is quite rare in other national army ranks.
After the end of the war, Luo Zhuoying also realized that the strong support of the local people was the key to their victory in the war, and he also expressed high appreciation for the work of Huang Xiandu and others.
You must know that at that time, the Southern Anhui Incident had already occurred, and the attitude of the Kuomintang towards the Communist Party had become very subtle, and it was difficult for Luo Zhuoying not to be suspected by Chiang Kai-shek in such a move.
Moreover, in the earlier Battle of Songhu, Luo Zhuoying's troops were active in a "Shanghai Working Women's Field Service Corps" composed mainly of Communist Party members and Communist Youth League members, and the head of the regiment was Hu Lanqi, the secretary of Mr. He Xiangning.
Considering all of the above, Chiang Kai-shek was likely to suspect that General Luo Zhuoying had close contact with the Communists, and he was so suspicious that he was naturally reluctant to give Luo Zhuoying the right to command the front line in the War of Liberation.
