After Wang Yi asked the United States to support reunification, Lai Qingde changed his tune, and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council responded to the point

author:Observer's Diary

The Taiwan issue has always been one of the major challenges facing China, and its complexity and sensitivity are self-evident.

Recently, however, there seems to have been a positive shift in attitude on the part of the Taiwanese side, not only in the statements of the political leadership, but also in the increasing frequency of people-to-people exchanges.

The beginning of this series of changes can be traced back to the visit of former Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou to the mainland.

After Wang Yi asked the United States to support reunification, Lai Qingde changed his tune, and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council responded to the point

This visit not only restarted high-level exchanges between the two sides of the strait, but also laid a good foundation for subsequent exchanges and cooperation.

Subsequently, Kuomintang legislator Fu Laiqing also followed in his footsteps and further promoted cross-strait communication and understanding.

Such positive interaction has undoubtedly injected new impetus into the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.

What is even more worth mentioning is that Lai Qingde was also forced to adjust his stance before taking office and began to discuss the issue of "peace."

This change not only reflects the changes in the political ecology of the island of Taiwan, but also reflects the impact of the international situation on the Taiwan issue.

Under the trend of globalization and regional integration, peace and stability have become the common pursuit of the international community.

Therefore, Lai Qingde's change can also be regarded as conforming to the international trend and understanding the reality of cross-strait relations.

At the same time, a number of high-ranking U.S. officials have recently visited China, which is seen as a signal that the United States intends to ease relations between China and the United States.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also embarked on a trip to China after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, holding talks with mainland Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

During the talks, Foreign Minister Wang Yi frankly demanded that the United States stop undermining China's strategic security interests, which reflects China's firm position in safeguarding its own interests and regional peace and stability.

Although Blinken still declared during the talks that he supports the one-China policy and opposes "Taiwan independence", this statement has not completely dispelled China's misgivings.

After all, the United States has repeatedly violated its own commitments in past actions and interfered in the Taiwan issue. Therefore, the Chinese side has maintained a high degree of vigilance and prudence in the face of the US attitude.

However, it is undeniable that the change in attitude on the island of Taiwan is an indisputable fact.

This change is not only reflected in the political leadership's stance but also in the people's perception of cross-strait relations.

More and more people in Taiwan have begun to realize that peace and stability are the foundation for the development of cross-strait relations and the key to Taiwan's future development.

Against this backdrop, Lai Qingde's change in attitude is particularly eye-catching.

According to reports, when talking about cross-strait relations, Lai Qingde has expressed his willingness to aim at peace and called for cross-strait dialogue.

This change in posture is not only interesting, but also reflects the new understanding and expectations of the Taiwan side for cross-strait relations.

However, it should be pointed out that Lai's statement is to a large extent aimed at pandering to the United States in order to continue to gain its support.

The peace he spoke of was more like a strategy aimed at confusing the mainland.

Therefore, while affirming Lai Qingde's statement, we also need to maintain a sober mind and a prudent attitude.

In the face of the PLA's continued efforts to reduce the living space of "Taiwan independence," Lai Ching-te may hope that we can reduce the frequency of warships and planes cruising so that he can avoid falling into a dilemma.

If he is indifferent, he may make some "Taiwan independence" elements feel dissatisfied; If it continues to provoke the mainland, it may be in opposition to the United States, because the Biden administration prefers to maintain the status quo.

This delicate balance makes Lai Qingde need to be more cautious and tactful in his statement.

Although Lai Qingde's mention of peace may lack a certain sincerity, the conditions for dialogue he put forward deserve our attention.

He pointed out that cross-strait exchanges must respect "Taiwan's sovereignty and democracy" and carry out dialogue on the basis of equality and dignity, and that both sides need to understand each other's positions. Although these conditions do not explicitly state "Taiwan independence," they reveal the meaning of "Taiwan independence" everywhere.

Therefore, we need to conduct an in-depth analysis and interpretation of Lai's statement in order to better deal with the complications that may arise.

It can be seen from Ma Ying-jeou's recent visit to the mainland that the DPP authorities are unable to stop cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, nor can they resist the call for peaceful reunification between the two sides of the strait.

Lai Ching-de's banner of peace obviously does not represent the mainstream public opinion on the island of Taiwan.

When the United States announced its decision to sell arms to Taiwan, the DPP authorities even expressed their gratitude and support in a high-profile manner.

Such blatant collusion with external forces not only violates international law and basic norms governing international relations, but also seriously undermines China's national interests and national dignity.

In the face of this situation, we did not show favor to Lai Qingde's change of attitude, but issued a solemn warning to him.

Recently, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the mainland issued a clear statement sternly pointing out the danger of collusion between the DPP authorities and external forces to "seek independence by force." This is a very clear signal: We will not tolerate any act of splitting the country.

At the same time, we also call on the Taiwan compatriots to clearly recognize this fact: Only peaceful reunification is the ultimate destination and the best choice for cross-strait relations.

In order to further express our strong dissatisfaction with and resolute opposition to US interference in the Taiwan issue, we have not shied away from directly naming the United States and demanding that it earnestly fulfill its commitment not to support "Taiwan independence" and immediately stop its armed support for Taiwan.

This move not only reflects our firm determination and strong will to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also sends a clear and unequivocal signal to the world: Any attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs and undermine the peaceful development of cross-strait relations will be severely cracked down on and sanctioned.

In short, the complexity and sensitivity of the Taiwan issue cannot be overlooked.

We need to maintain a high degree of vigilance and prudence in dealing with the various complications that may arise.

At the same time, we also need to firmly safeguard national unity and territorial integrity and never tolerate any act of splitting the country.

Only a solution to the Taiwan issue through peace, cooperation and dialogue is a wise move that serves the interests of all parties.

We should continue to work hard to promote the peaceful development, cooperation, and exchanges of cross-strait relations, and work together to realize the complete reunification of the motherland and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
