Not long ago, when the police of the Huajiadi Police Station of the Chaoyang Public Security Bureau of Beijing visited the jurisdiction, Uncle Wang, a resident, asked the police officer Guo Zhehao for help, and Uncle Wang said that the staff of a broadband company went to his home to repair the broadband network, and then the fixed telephone at home could not be used.
Subsequently, a black "set-top box" style device at the terminal of Uncle Wang's telephone line attracted Guo Zhehao's attention. This box is the "culprit" that interferes with the fixed-line signal.
Not only that, this black box police had seen it before when handling the case, and it was a voice gateway device called VOIP. VOIP can be connected to the telephone network through fixed telephone lines, and the overseas network signal can be converted into the city's fixed line signal. And because it is installed in residents' homes, it is very hidden.
In the case of households where VOIP devices are installed, the network cable will be quietly used by wire fraud gangs to engage in fraudulent activities. After VOIP signal conversion, when other citizens receive overseas scam calls, they will be displayed as calls starting with 010 (or other characteristics), so as to reduce the vigilance of fraud targets.

The police judged that the staff of the broadband company that provided the door-to-door service was fake. With the help of the property personnel in the community, the police quickly obtained the physical characteristics of the suspect man. The next day, when the suspect reappeared and was about to come to the door for "network maintenance", he was caught red-handed by the police.
The suspect said he saw a job posting online and applied for a job as an "equipment installer." The "boss" contacted him via online video and WeChat, distributed badges and tooling that pretended to be the staff of the broadband company, and mailed him VOIP equipment by courier.
It is reported that other members of the gang will pretend to be the customer service of a broadband company to make random phone calls and make appointments for door-to-door services on the grounds of increasing bandwidth for free or carrying out signal maintenance. After the appointment was successful, the suspect was contacted, informed of the installation location, and asked him to come to the door for installation.

In a month, the suspect installed dozens of VOIP equipment in accordance with the instructions of the "boss", making a profit of nearly 10,000 yuan, and most of the victims were elderly. At present, the criminal suspect has been criminally detained in accordance with the law, and the case is undergoing further work.
Coincidentally, on January 9, 2023, Luo, a citizen of Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province, received a landline call with a caller ID of a local number, and Luo answered the call without vigilance. The other party pretended to be a staff member of the Insurance Regulatory Commission, and defrauded Luo of a total of more than 270,000 yuan on the grounds that the interest rate of Jingdong Baitiao was high and affecting credit reporting.
After receiving the report, the Pingxiang police arrested 9 suspects and seized 14 VOIP devices on January 30 after careful investigation. The criminal gang hid in various hotels in the city, and assisted overseas fraudsters in committing fraud by setting up VOIP equipment and using hotel landline phone lines to convert overseas numbers into local fixed lines.

In daily life, the majority of netizens are requested to continuously enhance their awareness of prevention:
1. Do not trust or call back strange calls, and when encountering calls from unknown sources such as those claiming to be "customer service", "staff of a company", "public procuratorate and law", etc., they should call the official channels for verification.
2. Do not disclose your ID number, bank card account number, mobile phone verification code and other personal information to strangers, do not follow the "guidance" of the other party, and do not send money or transfer money to strangers, and must verify the other party's account and identity information again and again before transferring.
3. Beware of Trojan viruses and phishing links, do not click on suspicious website links, be cautious in scanning QR codes from unknown sources, and be cautious in connecting to free WIFI.
Remember! Caller ID, whether it is a mobile phone number, an overseas number, or a local landline number, as long as you transfer money, it is likely to be a fraudster who is racking his brains to pit your money!
