author:Consumer Reports

What is the sampling situation of electric shavers in the past three years?

While spending power is ridiculed for being inferior to dogs for men, electric shavers are a care appliance that almost every adult man will have. Which brands and which indicators are easy to fail to meet the standards in the sampling inspection of the regulatory authorities? What should consumers pay attention to when choosing an electric shaver?

In April 2024, Consumer Reports compiled the sampling data of electric shavers released by the State Administration for Market Regulation and provincial and municipal market supervision administrations from 2021 to 2024, and analyzed the data to draw useful conclusions for consumers.

The results show that the regulatory authorities have sampled a total of 344 batches of electric shavers for more than 3 years, of which 29 batches are unqualified, involving nominal brands such as Yingqu, Huanxing, Wushang WUSHANG, Yours Yongri, Riwei, etc., and the main unqualified items are signs and instructions, power connections and external soft wires, heat and flame resistance, structure, etc., and some unqualified items may have the risk of electric shock.

The 29 batches of unqualified involved nominal brands such as Yingqu, Huanxing, Yours, Yongri, and Riwei

On a book platform, there are as many as 130,000+ notes about "razor".

There is a huge price difference between razors on the market, you must have heard of Philips, Braun, and Panasonic high-end shavers that cost more than 3,000 yuan; You may also have bought domestic razors such as Pentium, Feike, and Superman with a price of only a few dozen yuan. Electric shavers can be divided into reciprocating shavers and rotary electric shavers according to their working principles, but the latter is quieter than the former.

Over the past three years (January 2021 to April 2024), the State Administration for Market Regulation and the provincial and municipal market supervision and administration bureaus have sampled a total of 344 batches of electric shavers, of which 29 batches are unqualified, with a pass rate of 91.6%.

The overall pass rate of electric shavers is high, and the pass rate is about 90% in 3 years.

Analyzed by year, there are fluctuations in the pass rate of electric shavers. In 2021, 91 batches were sampled, with a pass rate of 86.8%, 98 batches were sampled in 2022, with a pass rate of 95.9%, and 130 batches were sampled in 2023, with a pass rate of 90.0%. The sampling batches in 2023 have a large jump compared with the previous two years.

However, there are still many brands that have been found to be unqualified, including electric shavers with nominal trademarks such as Yingqu, Huanxing, Yours, and Riwei. The details are as follows:

In August 2021, the Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation issued a notice on the supervision and random inspection of the quality of daily consumer goods products, and one batch of "Riwei" electric shavers nominally produced by "Ningbo Riwei Electric Appliance Co., Ltd." was unqualified, and the unqualified items were power connections and external flexible wires.

Founded in 1993, Ningbo Riwei Electric Appliance Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive fashion home appliance enterprise integrating research, development and sales of personal care smart products such as electric hair clippers and electric shavers, according to the REWELL flagship store of the e-commerce platform.

Other unqualified manufacturers and brands will not be repeated.

10 batches of power connection and external flexible wire are unqualified, and unqualified products may have the risk of electric shock

According to the "Global & Chinese Mainland Personal Care (Meijian) Small Home Appliance Market Trend" report released by GFK, in the first three quarters of 2023, the sales of China's personal care small home appliance market have reached 40.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.6 billion yuan. Among them, the products with the largest increase are beauty instruments, men's shavers and hair dryers, and the sales of these three categories have accounted for more than 70%.

Personal care products have been favored by more and more consumers in recent years, and for men, choosing a safe and easy-to-use razor is the first step to clean and groom.

In the sampling, the unqualified items of electric shavers are also relatively concentrated, mainly for signs and instructions, power connections and external soft wires, heat resistance and flame resistance, these three items account for 78.90% of the unqualified times.

The unqualified indicators of signs and descriptions were the most serious, with as many as 14 batches being unqualified, accounting for about 36.8%. The product is not marked with the content of the mark and the electrical parameters, which does not meet the requirements of the national mandatory standards. This indicator is unqualified, and once the consumer misoperates, it is prone to electric shock, mechanical hazards and other injury accidents. In addition, unqualified signs and instructions may cause users to not be able to safely remove the battery before discarding the product, which may lead to the risk of polluting the environment.

The power connection and external flexible wire items are worthy of consumer attention, related to safety risks, and 10 batches are unqualified. The national standard stipulates that the size of the prongs of the appliance inserted into the output socket shall be consistent with the size of the output socket. Inconsistent dimensions can make it difficult to insert or unplug between plugs and sockets, and can also pose a risk of overheating and electric shock.

Heat-resistant and flame-resistant 6 batches were unqualified. The project mainly assesses whether the insulation material is heat and flame resistant enough, prevents the insulation material from softening and deforming at high temperatures, and the electric shaver cannot be used, or the displacement of related components, especially live parts, resulting in short circuit and electric shock hazard.

Consumer Reports advises

(1) Check whether the electric shaver has a product name and model, manufacturer, production address, qualification certificate, etc., avoid buying three-no products, and use them correctly in accordance with the instructions.

(2) Electric shavers are generally divided into rotary and reciprocating according to the classification of cutter heads, and the rotary ones are divided into two cutter heads and three cutter heads. It is generally believed that the more heads, the larger the area in contact with the skin, and the higher the shaving efficiency, so under the same conditions, the three heads are more efficient to use.

(3) Charge according to the requirements of the manual, do not overcharge. When charging, pay attention to prevent water vapor, dirty substances, etc. from contaminating the socket interface. Regularly clean the remaining beard at the head of the knife to keep it hygienic.
