Does tonsillectomy have an effect on immunity?

author:Dr. Zheng Ligang of Otolaryngology

Removing tonsils will not lead to a decrease in the child's immunity, parents are very concerned about this issue, today Dr. Zheng Ligang of ENT combined with recent research results, to talk about this problem.

Does tonsillectomy have an effect on immunity?

The most recent study included 57 children with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome with hypertrophied tonsils. Thirty-seven children were divided into a partial tonsillectomy group and 20 children were divided into a tonsillectomy group. CD3(+), CD4(+), CD8(+), CD4(+)/CD8(+) levels were detected by cellular immunoassay, and IgG, IgA, and IgM levels were detected by humoral immunoassay. Blood samples were collected preoperatively and at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. The levels of IgG, IgA and IgM in the IgG, IgA and tonsillectomy groups decreased significantly at 1 month after surgery and returned to normal levels at 3 months after surgery (P < 0.05). The levels of IgG, IgA and IgM in the partial tonsillectomy group decreased slightly, but the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in preoperative and postoperative cellular immune function between the two groups (P>0.05).

Does tonsillectomy have an effect on immunity?

The results of this study suggest that plasma-mediated temperature-controlled radiofrequency ablation of partial tonsillectomy does not affect humoral and cellular immunity in children. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in preoperative and postoperative cellular immune function between the two groups (P>0.05).

Does tonsillectomy have an effect on immunity?

From the above results, it can be seen that plasma-mediated temperature-controlled radiofrequency ablation of partial tonsillectomy does not affect humoral and cellular immunity in children.
