The mainland military did not sit on the sidelines, but intensified its patrols in the sea and airspace around the main island of Taiwan.
Chinese fighter planes flew thousands of miles to the sea east of Taiwan, which was unimaginable in the past.

Early in the morning of 8 May, the sky over Lanyu Township, Taitung, was unusually calm, and suddenly, an unfamiliar military plane flew in from afar, gradually approaching the coastline, and the radar of Taiwan's defense airspace did not pick up the trace of this plane.
The local people thought it was a routine military patrol, but they didn't expect the next scene to plunge the whole incident into a fog.
The military plane of unknown origin flew straight toward the airspace of Lanyu Township, Taitung County, and the pilot reportedly made contact with the ground personnel of the Taiwan military and expressed his intention to land at the local airport.
In accordance with the provisions of the international law of the sea, the airspace over Lanyu Township is already within the scope of China's 12-nautical-mile territorial waters, which is a blatant provocation to China's sovereignty.
Just when everyone was still speculating about where the fighter plane came from, several Chinese People's Liberation Army fighters suddenly came from a distance and quickly surrounded the "unscrupulous" plane, and the two sides encountered in mid-air, and the situation was quite tense for a while.
The Chinese pilot sternly reprimanded and demanded that the other side immediately leave China's airspace, but the other pilot turned a deaf ear and went his own way, as if he had not heard it, and continued to fly forward. It can be seen that this is a US military fighter!
As a result, the Chinese fighter was forced to take tough measures, electromagnetic interference and radar locking, and seeing the Chinese side's real gun and practical attitude, the other side began to beg for mercy, saying that it was a misunderstanding, and then turned back in embarrassment.
This encounter over eastern Taiwan has brought great shock and lessons to Taiwan's military and US military.
Why can Chinese military planes fly to the east of Taiwan?
After the incident, Li Zhengjie, a well-known retired major general in Taiwan, expressed surprise that the Continental Army planes could fly to the Taitung area. Because in the past, due to factors such as range and fuel, the Continental Army aircraft rarely carried out missions in the waters east of Taiwan.
So how did they do it this time? Li Zhengjie gave two possibilities: First, the mainland may have dispatched an aircraft carrier battle group to let the aircraft carrier's airborne J-15 fighters patrol the waters east of Taiwan. Once an aircraft carrier is in the nearby waters, fighter jets can fly freely over eastern Taiwan without range restrictions.
Second, the Continental Army aircraft may have used air tankers to refuel them on their way to Taitung, thus extending their range and reaching the waters off the east coast of Taiwan.
Regardless of the means used, this is a new escalation of the Continental Army's military operations in the Taiwan Strait. Li Zhengjie said frankly that the fact that the Continental Army planes were able to penetrate deep into Taiwan's rear as never before and exercise all-round surveillance and control over Taiwan from a strategic height means that Taiwan's defense system has encountered tremendous challenges.
The frequent attacks of the Continental Army aircraft are "showing toughness"
Li Zhengjie also has his own analysis of why the Continental Army's planes are so frequently active in the Taiwan Strait.
He believes that this is actually the mainland's dispatch of military planes to convey its hard-line attitude and stand to the Taiwan authorities and the United States. Whenever there is "Taiwan independence" talk or deeds in the Taiwan region or there are close exchanges between Taiwan and the United States, the mainland military will arrange for large-scale military planes to continue to patrol closely outside the Taiwan waters.
For example, when an earthquake occurs on the island of Taiwan or when Ma Ying-jeou, a pro-mainland countryman, visits the mainland, the mainland will appropriately reduce military planes to carry out demonstrative patrols. This is clearly a matter of political and strategic considerations.
Li Zhengjie said: In this way, the mainland has formed strong military and psychological pressure on the Taiwan authorities and the United States. Although Taiwan's defense department will also send more fighters to deal with it, it is simply powerless to confront it.
The two sides have formed a passive situation in which "the mainland unilaterally exerts military pressure and the Taiwan military is unable to counterattack."
He analyzed that if Taiwan continues to collude with the United States, the mainland may allow fighter planes to cross the center line of the Taiwan Strait in the future and continue to disturb Taiwan within Taiwan's 12-nautical-mile territorial waters, and the situation will be even more tense at that time.
"Resisting reunification by force" can only end up in ashes
The Taiwan region was shocked by the fact that PLA fighters were able to penetrate deep into the airspace of Lanyu Township in Taitung. A Taiwan military expert even questioned whether the overall defense strength of the Taiwan military would have lost its significance if such a huge hole had been found in Taiwan's eastern defense line.
As a matter of fact, the overall combat strength of the Taiwan military is simply not capable of competing with the mainland army. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has absolutely superior military strength, and once a substantive battle is launched, the Taiwan army is destined to be defeated in an instant.
As Li Zhengjie said in the show, "Resisting reunification by force is a dead end." If the Taiwan region really tries to "confront reunification by force," it will be a self-defeating end. The fantasies of any "Taiwan independence" elements are destined to be a flash in the pan.
The new military capability displayed by the mainland in Taitung this time indicates that the time for resolving the Taiwan Strait issue is approaching.
Once the situation becomes uncontrollable, the mainland will certainly take resolute action to complete the liberation of Taiwan, and the Taiwan military will be powerless to stop it at that time.
A new military pattern in the Taiwan Strait is taking shape at a rapid pace, and Lai Qingde will face an arduous political test when he takes up his post in the face of danger.
