An 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck Wenchuan, Sichuan
Nearly 70,000 people have been killed and 18,000 are missing
More than 370,000 people were injured
Since then, on this day in May, the Chinese people have been forever injured
16 years have passed
The years healed the devastation
Wenchuan has regained its footing from the ashes
The children who were rescued from the earthquake
How's it going?
During the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake
11-year-old Niu Yu was covered by a stone slab
Crushed under the rubble of a collapsed classroom
She lasted three days and three nights
When rescue came, his life was saved
But he lost his right leg forever
Such a reality made Niu Yu unacceptable for a while
After that, Niu Yu spent 10 years
Learn to accept imperfect right legs
She stepped on the "mechanical steel legs" to appear at Shanghai Fashion Week↓
Attach a glitter wand to the prosthesis
In the night, he walked out of the pace of "six relatives do not recognize" ↓
2023
Niu Yu was elected as a representative of the 14th Sichuan Provincial People's Congress
"I used to encourage people spiritually," she said
But now it's time to do more practical
Helping to give a voice to people with disabilities like me"
"Scars are not a shame on me
is a medal of my courage"
After the earthquake, I was buried for three days and three nights, and I was only 11 years old when my leg was amputated.
I didn't want people to find out that I was disabled, I usually wore baggy pants, and I either left early or last to eat. Even though everyone knew that my legs were inconvenient, I still wanted to hide and live like a normal person.
It took me 10 years to try to remove the artificial shell of my prosthesis and let everyone see me as I was. The moment that really changed me was the marathon held on the 10th anniversary of the Wenchuan earthquake.
I was last in the race, and in the last three kilometres, because of my slow pace, a lot of the runners had already turned back from both sides of the track. At that time, someone shouted "Come on, sister", and then everyone began to shout "Come on China" and "Come on Wenchuan", that scene really shocked me and even touched my heart.
Every step I took towards the finish line, I was thinking about the question, why am I so afraid of letting people know that I am disabled?
I have been really brave in the past 10 years, I survived the earthquake for 3 days, survived more than 30 surgeries, and I have completed my studies in the past 10 years, and I have not escaped anything. I think I'm so brave, I should let everyone see my bravery, instead of thinking that these scars, this prosthetic leg is my shame, it's my medal of courage.
After that day, I didn't want to sponge my prosthetic leg and I had to start my life again.
At the time of the earthquake, Gao Ying was only 14 years old
Crushed under the rubble for more than 20 hours
She was rescued from the rubble
The first expression given is a smile
Many people also remember this "smiling girl"
Because she was buried for too long, Gao Ying had to amputate her leg
But with an optimistic nature, she practiced walking hard
It became the hospital of the same period at that time
The first child to walk on his own
After recovering, Gao Ying successfully completed her studies
Last year, she got married and received blessings from the whole network
"I can still enjoy the sun
It's already a lucky thing."
A lot of people ask me why I smile when I'm rescued. I think that after being buried for so long, I saw the rescue officers and soldiers, and when I saw the light outside, that moment was like a new life for me, and I was very happy. Maybe I have optimism in my bones, and that's how I was born.
Later, I went through three amputations, and the doctors and nurses would take me to activities and go out every day, and my messy thoughts were all squeezed out. Their love makes me smile all the time, and laughter is also my way of giving back to them, hoping that they will look at me and laugh and feel that their efforts have not been in vain.
In my life after the amputation, I thought of myself as a normal person. Ordinary people also encounter setbacks, and setbacks are the norm, and it's good to overcome them. I was lucky to be able to enjoy the breeze and sunshine on this land, and some people never had this opportunity again.
The earthquake brought me first of all, because I could never get back the things I had lost, and I could never see the people I wanted to see again, but at the same time, it gave me insights, and I really felt the warmth between people in this society.
At the time, I didn't understand why there was selfless love and help between strangers, but later I slowly understood that this is probably the unity and warmth in people's bones.
When an earthquake occurs
The teaching building where Yang Lin was located collapsed in an instant
At just 14 years old, she did her best
Push two classmates to safety
But he suffered multiple injuries to his pelvis, chin, and legs
Later, he was transferred to Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital for treatment
At the hospital, Yang Lin refused to communicate with people
It was the medical staff who helped her out of the shadows
Since then, the "dream of medical care" has taken root in her heart
Yang Lin chose nursing as a major in college
After graduating, he came to the hospital where he had been treated
——Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital
Become a nurse in the rehabilitation department
"Because I have been illuminated by the light
So I want to be a light to others."
When the earthquake struck, the school building I was in collapsed from the third floor to the ground. After my classmate was rescued, aftershocks struck and I fell unconscious.
I remember that it was completely dark when I came out, and many rescuers were digging and digging on the rubble, and many parents and villagers were also helping. At that time, I felt very helpless, but a medical worker gave me a reassuring pill, she told me not to panic, and she helped me get a drip on the spot.
After the earthquake, the flesh wounds can still be beared, but the scars in the heart are not easy to heal. In the hospital, I refused to communicate with people at one point and closed myself off. In fact, every night I feel scared, I always feel that there will be an earthquake when it gets dark, and I am immersed in my thoughts and can't get out.
At this time, it was also the medical staff who came to enlighten me. The nurse sister took care of me like a baby, cheered me on, and helped me slowly come out of the shadows. Since then, I have been firm in my "dream of medical care".
I have been working in the rehabilitation department for 9 years now, and I have grown from a little girl full of fear to a nurse. I have always walked this path very firmly, because my life has been illuminated by the light, so I hope to be a beam of light for others and give a pull to people in the dark.
