What is National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day?
On May 12, 2008, a devastating earthquake struck Wenchuan, Sichuan, causing heavy casualties and property damage. With the approval of the State Council, starting from 2009, May 12 of each year has been designated as the "National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day" in order to further enhance the awareness of disaster prevention and mitigation among the whole people and promote the improvement of the level of disaster prevention, mitigation and relief work.
