By the end of next year, the sponge city compliance rate in the city's built-up areas will reach more than 40%.
Yesterday afternoon, a spring rain just fell in Beijing. In Longtan West Lake Park, rainwater collected in more than 320 hectares upstream flows into a 62,000-cubic-meter storage tank under Longtan West Lake. He Lining, deputy director of the Longtan West Lake Park Management Office, said that the storage tank is like a huge sponge, which coexisted and stored 238,000 cubic meters of rainwater last year, and 140,000 cubic meters of rainwater was recharged to Longtan West Lake after purification, effectively improving the water quality.

He Lining said that the 140,000 cubic meters of water replenishment is equivalent to adding three lakes of landscape water to Longtan West Lake, which can greatly reduce the amount of water used to replenish water through reclaimed water pipelines or moats. A large amount of water is collected, so that the lotus flowers in the park have reached more than 20,000 square meters of ornamental area, and the water quality has also been greatly purified. Through the improvement of the water body, 14 species and 57 types of waterfowl and waterbirds have been monitored and settled in Longtan West Lake.

As the first confluence storage pond project in the central city, the Longtan West Lake storage tank can effectively reduce the impact of overflow pollution on the water body of Longtan West Lake and the downstream south moat while saving water, and improve the flood control guarantee capacity of the surrounding areas. Xie Gexin, director of the equipment department of the No. 1 Pipe Network Branch of the Beijing Drainage Group, said that now that the liquid level of the storage tank is controlled, precipitation within 33 millimeters in one hour will not enter Longtan West Lake and the downstream river. During the heavy rainstorm on 23.7 last year, the rainfall in this area was about 216 mm, and the gate was opened in three times to release water into the storage tank, with a total of 55,000 cubic meters of water, and there was no water accumulation on the road in 5 streets including overpasses and 320 hectares upstream.

In Beijing, where water resources are scarce, the original intention of building a sponge city is to retain precious water from the sky, recycle rainwater, and reduce stagnant water and waterlogging. Since 2019, Beijing has continued to promote the construction of sponge cities. As of the end of last year, the sponge city construction standard area in the city's built-up area was about 507 square kilometers, accounting for 35% of the built-up area. By the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan, it will strive to reach more than 40%.
