On May 7, 2024, China's new ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, was interviewed by reporters from China Global Television Network (CGTN) and Press Trust of India (PTI) on the eve of his new appointment in India. Indian reporters asked Ambassador Xu Feihong that recently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India-China relations are very important and significant, and said that the two sides urgently need to resolve the long-standing border issue. In response, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that China and India are maintaining close communication and making positive progress through diplomatic and military channels on issues related to resolving the border situation. The border issue is not the whole story of China-India relations, and it should be properly managed in an appropriate position in China-India relations. However, from the perspective of the Indian side, as long as the border is in an abnormal state, it is impossible to normalize India-China relations. What are your thoughts on this? In this regard, Xu Feihong said: I have noted Prime Minister Modi's remarks on the significance of China-India relations, and the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry immediately responded positively. In August 2023, President Xi Jinping spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The two sides reaffirmed their recognition of the importance of China-India relations and stressed that the two countries should properly handle the border issue and jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas. Xu Feihong pointed out that China has always maintained that China-India relations cannot be defined by a single issue or area, and that the border issue is not the whole of China-India relations. In September 2014, President Xi Jinping said in a speech at the Indian Council on World Affairs that we should not focus on differences and ignore friendship and cooperation, let alone allow the development process of the two countries and the overall situation of bilateral relations to be disrupted. Xu Feihong stressed that after the border incident in June 2020, China has maintained diplomatic and military communication with the Indian side, and the two militaries have disengaged at four points in the western section of the border, and the situation on the China-India border is generally stable and controllable, and the border area is peaceful and tranquil. We are ready to work with the Indian side to accommodate each other's concerns, reach a mutually acceptable solution on relevant specific issues at an early date through dialogue and consultation, and turn the page on this round of events as soon as possible.
