In 765 AD, the first year of Zong Yongtai of the Tang Dynasty, Du Fu resigned from the post of Jiedu staff officer and returned to Chengdu Caotang alone. At this time, his heart was full of sadness and resentment. He was determined to serve the country all his life, but he was neglected and excluded by the villain, so he had no choice but to leave. A few months later, Yan Wu died, and Du Fu's reliance in Chengdu disappeared. He took a flat boat, passing through Jiazhou and Yuzhou, and finally arrived in Zhongzhou, Sichuan. The scenery along the way touched his heart, and he splashed ink and wrote the popular poem "Traveling Night Book". This poem is known as the masterpiece of Du Fu's life, and it has been selected into Chinese textbooks every year, which shows its far-reaching influence.

The first two lines of this poem are like a delicate riverside scene. The breeze caresses the surface of the river, stirring up layers of ripples, and the grass on both sides of the river dances with the wind. The poet uses the word "Du" to skillfully dye the whole picture with the color of loneliness, which is not only a description of the external world, but also a portrayal of the poet's inner world. The grass swaying in the wind, like the poet himself, is lonely and helpless.

In five or six verses, the poet mocks himself in rhetoric, claiming that his fame does not come from articles, but from old age and infirmity. In fact, this is the poet's implicit expression of dissatisfaction and helplessness over being forced to resign. He longs to be loyal to his country, but for various reasons he cannot realize his ambitions, and this contradiction and struggle are hidden in this seemingly prosaic words.
In the last two lines, the poet uses the sand gull as a metaphor to ask when his wandering career is over. The water and the sky are connected, the sky and the earth are empty, and the sand gulls are wandering in the sky, which is the true portrayal of the poet himself turning away from the rivers and lakes and involuntarily being himself. This sense of "drifting" is like a sand gull losing its way in the vast sky, which makes people sigh for what happened to the poet after reading it.
