How to distinguish a common ant from a red fire ant?
According to experts from Fujian Provincial Disease Control and Prevention, it can be judged whether it is a red fire ant by the characteristics of the nest, aggression and morphological characteristics.
The mature workers of red fire ants are reddish-brown, with a body length of 3~6 mm and a head width of about 0.5 mm. The body color of mature soldier ants is reddish-brown, the body length is about 0.5~1 times the body length of the worker ants, and the head width is about 1.5mm. The abdomen is oval in shape with a sting needle sticking out at the end, which is the most dangerous part of the red fire ant, and the sting needle has venom inside.
Red fire ants are social indicative insects, which have the habit of nesting and living in groups, and generally build nests in relatively stable ecological environments such as sunny open areas, barren slopes, grasslands, roadsides, flower nursery bases, ponds, parks and green spaces, and fields overgrown with weeds.
There is usually a build-up of sediment at the exit of the nest, forming a visible "anthill" on the ground. The average diameter of the anthill is more than 20cm, and the height is 10~30cm, which is significantly taller than the general ant hill, and the inner center of the anthill is a honeycomb-like porous structure.
