Fan Li decided to send his third son to bring a thousand taels of gold to Zhuang Sheng, but the eldest son insisted on going, and threatened not to let him go, he would definitely commit suicide to show his parents.

Fan Li was worried that Fan Bo would not be able to take away the money, but would harm his younger brother's life, and when he left, he repeatedly told him to give Zhuang Sheng a thousand taels of gold, so he didn't ask anything, and hurried home. The eldest son, Fan Bo, came to Chu and offered Zhuang Sheng a thousand taels of gold, and Zhuang Sheng promised to save Fan Zhong's life. But Fan Bo didn't listen to his father's words, and after giving Zhuang Sheng a thousand taels of gold, he didn't feel good in his heart, so he stayed in Chu State, wondering if Zhuang Sheng could handle this matter well.
Zhuang Sheng used the excuse to see the king of Chu and said that there was a catastrophe in the sky, and the prisoner should be pardoned to prevent natural disasters. After hearing this, the king of Chu completely believed it. Every time a prisoner was pardoned, the king of Chu had to send someone to seal the treasury so that people would know that the prisoner would soon be pardoned. When Fan Bo heard the news, he felt that he didn't need Zhuang Sheng, and his younger brother could be released from prison with amnesty, so he came to Zhuang Sheng's house again. Zhuang Sheng knew that Fan Bo didn't believe him, so he returned the thousand taels of gold to Fan Bo intact. Fan Bo is glad that he didn't spend the money in vain.
One thousand taels of gold is really a dime on nine cows to Tao Zhugong, but Fan Bo didn't expect that because of this miserliness, he would kill his younger brother. After Fan Bo left, Zhuang Sheng saw the king of Chu again. Zhuang Sheng said: "I heard the uproar outside, saying that the king's pardon of the prisoners this time was entirely for the son of Tao Zhugong, and everyone believes that the king should clarify it." The king of Chu then ordered Fan Zhong's head to be beheaded before issuing an amnesty. Fan Bo was still waiting for the amnesty, but before he could wait, he waited for the news of his brother's death.
