When they first arrived in Vietnam, the life of the troops was very difficult, and their clothing, food, shelter, and transportation were almost completely different from those in China. But we have high morale and the confidence and courage to overcome difficulties. Not afraid of the wanton and indiscriminate bombing of enemy planes, still less of the inconveniences of food, clothing, shelter, and transportation, they fought day and night on the front line of the struggle against the enemy, creating many miracles of war, and also showing the prestige of Chinese soldiers.

Aid to Vietnam and Resist the United States (Episode 14) Deep in the Coconut Grove

Deep in the coconut groves

Vietnam's climate is humid all year round, the weather is hot, especially in the rainy season, when we basically don't wear dry clothes, the shirt is always tightly attached to the body by sweat, for a long time, there are many mildew spots on the shirt, in order to solve the heat and prevent inflammation of the skin, each of our comrades-in-arms has three treasures, basin bucket and flashlight, in the hot summer, we have to take a cold shower three or four times a day, we can't eat in the hot weather, in order to keep the body in good condition, In order to better fulfill the tasks assigned to us by the Party and organizations at all levels, the leaders put forward the slogan of eating for the revolution and encouraged everyone to eat more.

In addition to the heat and humidity in Vietnam, there are many snakes, mosquitoes, locusts and small bites. The exposed parts of the body of the comrades-in-arms are infected by the redness and swelling of mosquito bites, and the itching is unbearable, and snakes are everywhere in Vietnam, especially when entering the mountains and forests to collect Chinese herbs and standing at mobile sentry posts at night, we must wear helmets, wear high-waisted rubber shoes, and tie up trouser legs tightly to prevent poisonous snake bites and locusts from penetrating. Even when sleeping, shake the quilt beforehand to prevent snakes from getting into the quilt and biting people.

Thatched barracks

In the early morning of May 19, 1968, we walked into the old company to the sound of drums. A secluded path connects chic huts that line the slopes of the col in a serpentine pattern. The camp is surrounded by greenery and bamboo, and there are wildflowers on the roadside. Since then, we have integrated into this combat collective, and we have also matured in the tempering of the troops, writing an unforgettable page in our military life.

In the barracks where we were stationed, a stream flowed from the front of the gate to the outside of the ditch, and the moss-covered stones rose and fell at the bottom of the ditch. Every time it rains heavily, the stream swells and the rapids rush down. Floods sometimes come and go fast, and sometimes they fall quickly. Adjacent to the company were three Vietnamese Nong families who lived across the ditch. During the slack season, it is common to see a few bulls walking on the path by the stream. The old banyan tree has lush branches and intertwined roots, and the jackfruit tree has curved trunks and branches, and the crown leaves are sparse. A path leads halfway up the hill, and this is our company.

Gray "military uniform"

During the period of aiding Vietnam to resist the United States, the troops had a strong sense of secrecy. Before leaving the country, our superiors asked us to pack all the clothes with the logo of the army and put them in the detention center, change into blue civilian clothes, wear a kind of helmet hat with a large brim on our heads, and brown plastic shoes under our feet. The comrades-in-arms looked at each other, feeling strange, and we became a team of migrant workers in uniform clothes. When I arrived at the battlefield in Vietnam, I found that this kind of Vietnamese-style clothing has good breathability, and it is easy to evaporate sweat during construction labor. But despite this, changing, washing, and drying clothes is a big hassle.

Vietnam has a humid climate, and during the rainy season, there is no sunlight for ten days and a half. Sweat-stained clothes cannot be dried after being changed and washed. The sun finally came out, but the sun-dried clothes were easily bombed by enemy planes. Therefore, the soldiers often wore sweaty clothes to work and slept under moldy quilts.

Poisonous snakes sleep

Vietnam is mountainous and densely forested, with steep slopes and deep valleys, rivers and a hot climate, sometimes as high as 40 degrees Celsius. Especially in the rainy season, it is rainy and continuous, the troops are stationed in the deep mountains and jungles, on the rugged winding mountain roads, the bushes are overgrown, mosquitoes, snakes and ants are rampant, and there is a local saying that "seven mosquitoes can stir-fry dishes". Compared with mosquitoes, what is even more terrifying is the elusive poisonous snake. One night, a hygienist returned to the tent from a night trip, and because he was so tired, he pulled on the quilt and fell asleep. Unexpectedly, he pulled this time, and it happened to alarm a poisonous snake lying in the bed! As soon as the snake turned around, it bit the hygienist's chest, right around his heart, and he died like this. After that, the troops gave an order: before going to bed, the quilt must be lifted and shaken, and it is necessary to make sure that there are no poisonous snakes before falling asleep.

Cultivating land

During our stay in Vietnam, due to the bombing of enemy planes and the tension of various tasks, we ate very few vegetables, and many of our comrades-in-arms suffered from mouth ulcers and rotten crotch diseases due to long-term lack of vitamins and humid climate. In order to solve the problem of lack of vegetables, we carried forward the spirit of self-reliance and took the team as a unit to open up the wasteland and grow vegetables.

In the evening, the comrades-in-arms watered, fertilized, weeded, etc., and when the cowpeas and tomatoes grew to a certain extent, they built a shelf for them, and inserted the cut branches into the roots of the cowpeas and tomatoes, and the beans could grow up the poles.

Due to our careful management, all kinds of vegetables grow very well, not only to solve the problem of our self-sufficiency in vegetables, sometimes the mainland embassy in Vietnam also comes to pull vegetables, to the military hospital to see a doctor of the Vietnamese villagers, see the vegetable field is fruitful, to us stretched out a thumbs up and said: sea melon, sea melon! The joy of the harvest also hung on the faces of every comrade-in-arms.

Condolences to the motherland

At the end of each year, it is the happiest day for the fighters, and we are about to usher in the motherland condolence group!

The condolence group toured to the station, and all gathered in the open area in the jungle of Vietnam in the evening, putting up lanterns and watching the performance of the condolence group. On the eve of the Spring Festival in 1969, the prestigious Guangzhou Military Region Art Troupe went to the front line to give a condolence performance on behalf of the motherland.

The most memorable thing for us is the "Greetings to Chairman Mao's Good Soldiers" sung by Deng Yun, the flowery soprano of the Guangzhou Military Region's Comrades-in-Arms Art Troupe, in which the song sings: The east wind is floating with colorful clouds, the galloping train is going south, greeting Mao Xi's good soldiers, the closest ......people on the bank of the Red River, the moving melody, and cordial greetings, flowing out of the song, make our fighters feel more cordial, the motherland thinks of us, and our relatives miss us, and we can't help but burst into tears. Thank you to the Motherland! Thank you, loved ones! Our anti-US fighters who aided Vietnam will certainly live up to the expectations of the people of the motherland and add glory to the five greats.

After a long time, the beautiful melody of "Greeting Chairman Mao's Good Soldier" has been echoing in the hearts of commanders and fighters......
