Tonight, the original musical "Lady Macbeth", adapted from Shakespeare's famous work, co-produced by Hongqiao Arts Center, and performed in English by Chinese, Dutch and British casts, officially kicked off. The performance will last for one month and bring a different kind of experience to the audience.
The musical Lady Macbeth is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's tragic work Macbeth. In the original story, Macbeth, a Scottish general, is instigated by a witch's prophecy and instigated by Lady Macbeth to kill the king and become king. After the usurpation of the throne, the couple could not escape the torment of their inner fears and doubts, and they were so brutal that they betrayed their relatives and finally went to self-destruction.
The musical cuts into the classics with new perspectives and clues, reconstructing Shakespeare's masterpiece of criminal psychology. From "he" to "she", the reason for Lady Macbeth's evil and sinking is revealed through flashbacks, further breaking the traditional meaning of heroic tragedy.
The play is adapted and composed by young British artists James Beeny and Gina Georgio, and created and rehearsed by Xu Jun, a national first-class director.
The musical "Lady Macbeth" is the first time that Shanghai East Hongqiao Theatre Management Co., Ltd. (Hongqiao Performing Arts Center) and Xu Jun Theatre have joined forces with overseas resources, and co-produced with Poly Shangyuewan (Shanghai) Theatre Management Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Culture Square.
It is understood that since 2019, Hongqiao Arts Center has cooperated with Xu Jun Drama to recreate the main elements such as script, stage art, and music in a modern and international way, and has successively launched the poetic drama "The Long Confession", the original musical "Zhao's Orphan" and "Hamlet", all of which have been highly recognized by the performance market.
The musical "Lady Macbeth" is an original work with a unique "mixed-race" temperament that the two sides have worked together again. It will be performed in Chinese, Dutch and English with full English casts. Maya Hakvoort, known as the "Queen of German-Austrian Musicals", plays the role of Lady Macbeth, and outstanding Chinese musical actresses Xu Lidong and Miao Mengchu will also play the same role.
The role of General Macbeth is played by British actor Karl Queensborough, who plays Hamilton in the West End version of the musical "Hamilton", and He Liangchen and Hu Chaozheng of China.
West End actor Richard Carson and West End actor Tom Hier, who is active on West End and British music shows, will play Macduff and Bancor, respectively. This is also their first Chinese musical production in Shanghai, which is very worth looking forward to.
At the same time, more than 30 young actors from China will participate in the performance, including many outstanding new forces, who will give wonderful performances to the play like bright stars. The cast of each country will shine on the stage with an unparalleled theatrical brilliance with a diverse combination.
In addition, the main creative team of this play also joined hands with industry art leaders to integrate reality and fantasy, hot and cold through the design concept of triple mirroring. The shapes and costumes are also more modern and fashionable, with a "futuristic" ethereal and "virtual" alienation. While creating a symbol of "innocence is darkness, darkness is innocence", the audience from different perspectives can enter the labyrinth of hearts and the world with the characters, and complete the puzzle of their own feelings and thoughts.
