【Interview】Aurèle Docquin: Computer modelling helps speaker design to bring better YG Acoustics sound

author:Video CN

Among Hi-End speakers, YG Acoustics is definitely an unforgettable brand. Not only because of its unique shape, but more importantly, because of their research on cutting-edge technology and computer modeling. At this year's TAS, the agent Junyun exhibited the new Sonja 3.3 of the Reference series, and Aurèle Docquin, the sales director of YG Acoustics Asia Pacific, came to Shanghai at the same time, so we chatted on the sidelines of the exhibition.

Tall and handsome, Aurèle Docquin is visiting Shanghai for the first time. In his view, China is a thriving market and a place for them to look to the future and promote their products and technologies.

This is the first exhibition of Sonja 3.3 in China (I saw it at the Beichang Audiovisual Exhibition Hall in Beijing in early January, and it was only a static display at that time). Aurèle Docquin and I emphasize that although the exterior is relatively similar compared to the second generation, the internal units, crossovers, etc., have been redesigned.

I know that since Dr. With Matthew Webster as the company's CEO, YG Acoustics has made extensive use of this technology in its loudspeaker designs, which has led to an ever-accelerating pace of product development. According to Aurèle Docquin, thanks to the use of self-developed computer programs and tools, the X.3 generation now has a significant increase in performance compared to the second generation. Through modeling, they can simulate all aspects of speaker design, such as simulating different speakers in different spaces, playing different types of music, and finding the best listening position. In addition to the speakers themselves, they modeled more than 200 amplifiers to simulate whether they would achieve a smooth frequency response and performance when paired with each other...... As a result, efficiency in product development has been greatly improved.

Hybrid Lattice treble

In the process, YG Acoustics designed and built the units it needed. For example, the hybrid Lattice treble reduces distortion while being durable, and at the same time expands the emperor's throne. The dual BilletCore midrange and woofer have a cone that is finely machined from aircraft-grade aluminium alloy and 99% recycled during the process, resulting in a finished cone that is only 0.2mm thick, resulting in unrivalled bandwidth, extremely low distortion and excellent transient response.

When it comes to "innovation", Aurèle Docquin places particular emphasis on the design of the crossover. This is one of the most critical factors in delivering superior sound quality, he says, and involves upfront measurement, modeling, and subjective listening, which requires repeated steps to get the results you really want. Judging from the pictures he showed, the crossover took up a large area of the speakers. All of this is produced at YG Acoustics' factory in Colorado, USA. In order to get the desired effect, they even produced their own PCB boards for the crossovers, and after finding that they could not find a capacitor that met their strict requirements, they also tried to produce them themselves.

Aurèle Docquin emphasises that it is precisely this refinement that allows the Sonja 3.3 to deliver a smooth full-range articulation, with a sense of stage and rich detail, and the entire speaker will give the impression that it is a single sound source. Speakers are capable of conveying a wealth of emotion, and every nuance, from tiny details to thunderous, heart-breaking impacts, is correctly reproduced on every note.

However, Aurèle Docquin also admits that although YG Acoustics has cutting-edge technology, from computer modeling to precision CNC machines for machining aluminum parts, they always believe that these technologies can improve R&D efficiency and produce a variety of parts that meet the requirements, and when the final product is present, they still choose to "receive it by ear". Fortunately, YG Acoustics, including CEO Matthew Webster, has many "golden ears" who love music and are enthusiasts, which is one of their magic weapons to stand tall in the Hi-End audio world.
