The Legend of Lanxiong Mountain

Lanxiong Mountain, the "Lanfeng Mountain" recorded in the "Water Scripture Note", our hometown Shangyu has always been called Lanzhong Mountain. Our small village, surrounded by mountains, is scattered, but every time it is mentioned, it is always the front mountain and the back mountain, and there are not many serious mountain names. Lan Zhongshan is probably the most solemn name among them.

This mountain looks big, but it's actually a little far away. Looking from the water surface of Hakuba Lake in front of the village, you can see mountains all over the sky. The farthest mountain range, almost half-hidden among the clouds, is where Lanzhong Mountain is located. On the way to Lanzhong Mountain, you have to hold a boat across the White Horse Lake, then pass through a large paddy field, and walk all the way forward before you find its heel under the mountain. At the foot of Lanzhong Mountain, wild bamboo shoots are particularly fat, and Ma Lantou is particularly tender. In the season when the spring bamboo shoots are launched, the grandfathers and uncles carry snakeskin bags and go to the foot of Lanzhong Mountain to bring back a whole bag of wild black bamboo shoots. I don't know what muddy water these bamboo shoots eat, where they look like wild bamboo shoots, and some of them are as strong as freshly smoked spring bamboo shoots in the bamboo forest. Peel out the bamboo shoot meat and put a bowl of dried vegetable and bamboo shoot soup, which has a delicious aftertaste. The uneaten bamboo shoots are dried on a wide bamboo plaque and dried into bamboo shoots. The raspberries picked back by the grandfathers and uncles from the foot of Lanzhong Mountain are as big as the bottom of a wine cup, red and sweet.

Why is Lanzhong Mountain called Lanzhong Mountain? It is said that it is because there are many orchids on the mountain, and there is a strange fragrance. Such orchids are also treasures. But the most fragrant orchids are hidden in the mountains. Who would dare to go into the mountains of Lanzhong Mountain? There are some stories about that untold and deep realm that have been handed down for a long time. The big python in Lanzhong Mountain is as thick as a rattan basket. When a person walks in the mountains, if he hits it, he will be tightly entangled, and it will be slowly swallowed into the snake's stomach by the huge snake's mouth, and there is no chance of escaping. This big snake has tasted the smell of human flesh, and can never forget it, often entrenched on the side of the mountain road, waiting for the people who collect firewood and dig medicine. You sit down to rest, and the serpent sprang out of the canopy, and took you in a tight grip until your bones were broken. Such legends, with the tone and tone of witnessing them, seem to be relayed by those who escaped by luck.

In addition to the big snake, there are also tigers that can eat people in the mountains. The child cried, and the sentence "The tiger of Lan Zhongshan came to eat you" immediately closed his mouth and stopped crying. It is rumored that there are also fierce robbers, who kill people without blinking an eyelid, although they have never been seen by anyone here, but they have left traces in the mountains. If the luck is not good, if you encounter such a thief, you will not be able to save your life. Adults never let children go to Lan Zhongshan to play.

Therefore, everything brought back from Lanzhong Mountain is extraordinary. Occasionally, we watched the boat that went to Lanzhong Mountain to chop wood, and we watched it shake the water in the morning, and in the evening, if we saw the adults coming back safe and sound with the boat propped up, we felt relieved. The ship returning from Lan Zhongshan always had something else to gain in addition to the dense bundles of firewood in the belly of the boat. The huge acorns are not at all the same thing as the firewood we picked from the back mountains. Wash them, pour them into an iron pot and stir-fry, and gradually the skin bursts, giving off the aroma of roasted flesh. The hairy chestnuts in autumn are cut back together with the branches. The impatient reached out to pick it up, and the hard prick poked into his finger, and the pain was so painful that he was about to shed tears. You have to put the chestnuts on the ground, grind them with stones or the soles of your shoes, and grind the outer thorn shells to reveal the maroon red seeds, then you can bite the chestnuts with your teeth and eat the tender white and crunchy flesh inside. It turns out that the chestnuts on Lanzhong Mountain have pulp. We occasionally picked chestnuts from the back mountains, but they were only empty shells.

Someone once brought back an orchid from the mountains, and the leaves of the orchid were deep and slender, and it had not yet bloomed. Its bare rhizome is barely soil-stained. I guess it grows in a clean and muddy rock.

In the Northern Wei Dynasty Li Daoyuan's "Notes on the Book of Water", he left pen and ink for the Lanxiong Mountain in Shangyu: "There is Lanfeng Mountain in the south of the county, the mountains are few trees and many stones, and the post road brings the mountains; There are three ridges in the mountain, the pillow belt of the Yangtze River, the lonely and dangerous, and the hope is like tilting. The road of the edge of the mountain, down to the river, all make the flying pavilion railing, take it and cross, say that the three ridges are three stones. This passage is also excerpted from the "Shangyu County Chronicle". "Wind", "Xiong" and "Final" are all the turn of one sound, which shows that the name of the mountain has been around for a long time. Less wood and more rock, perhaps just right for orchids. Of course, it is also said that Lanxiong is not an ordinary orchid, but Xiongxiong, a kind of herb that can be used as medicine, which is abundant in Lanxiong Mountain. This ancient mountain is the land of immortals, according to the Eastern Han Dynasty from the Three Kingdoms to the Two Jin Dynasty, the Taoist master Ge Xuan, his subordinate Sun Ge Hong, and the hermit Wang Fangping have all practiced or lived in the mountain. There is also a record in the "Notes on the Book of Water": "Danyang Ge Hong, retreating from the world, the foundation well is preserved." Lang evil king Fang Ping, good landscape, and the house orchid wind, fishing here, to the end of the dynasty. Wang Fangping was fishing at the water's edge, but the traveler did not know him, so he asked: "If you are fishing, do you catch fish and sell it?" He replied: "You can't fish it, and you can't sell it again." "I didn't catch it, and I didn't sell it if I caught it.

Choose a good sunny day and go to Lanxiong Mountain for the first time. The ancient post road recorded in the "Notes on the Book of Water" has long been annihilated, but there is a stone road with a ladder, which leads to the Fuxian Temple on the mountain. This temple is said to have been the immortal hermitage of Ge Xuan's cultivation and alchemy, Tang Xiantong eight years (867 years) opened the nunnery for the temple, after several repairs and expansions, in the seventh year of Yuan Dade (1303) officially fell into the Fuxian Monastery. The temple is built on the main peak of Lanxiong Mountain, the altitude is not high, but the road surface is deep and steep. It was winter, and the shrubs on both sides of the mountain road were sparse, and the stone paths were even more rugged. The bushes bear unknown red fruits, and there are small clusters of orange gardenias. The mountain road is silent, and the occasional pedestrian going up and down the mountain will soon disappear between the winding mountain paths. Climbing up the gravel path, I don't know where the end is, I just feel lost. When you reach the flat land in the middle of the mountain, the field of vision is opened, and as far as the eye can see, the mountains are continuous, and the small town under the mountain has retreated very far and very small. At this point, there is some meaning of "Lanxiong is surrounded by mountains, and the picture is hanging in the middle" (Zhao Youzhi's "Zhanlan Xiongshan"). However, where exactly is the Fuxian Temple, it is still not seen.

So I continued to go up, bypassing dozens of large and small bends, passing a small pavilion called the Buddha Pavilion, passing through a steep stone staircase covered with greenery, and suddenly saw a corner of the yellow wall looming in the trees. Go up more than 100 meters again, you will see the mountain gate of "Fuxian Temple", the name of the temple is on the top, the positive and negative are engraved with the size of the Zen couplet. Behind the mountain gate, there is a newspaper column, there are three handwritten words on the line, respectively, from the "Shangyu County Chronicles" to extract the "Fuxian Temple", "Ge Yuan Xian Weng Ji", "Shangyu County Lanxiong Mountain Fuxian Monastery Record" and other paragraphs, and the present person wrote a "Fuxian Temple Record", record the origin of this temple and the people, etc., the paper is mottled and stained, the text of the excerpt is slightly negligent, but the handwriting is rich and beautiful, and the view is sober.

The Legend of Lanxiong Mountain

From the mountain gate and then up, turn right, walk through a medicine garden, a simple and solemn temple has been clearly in front of you.

Although this temple is an ancient temple, the foundation of the earlier temple no longer exists. According to the Qing Guangxu "Shangyu County Chronicles School Continuation" recorded, after the establishment of the Fuxian Zen Temple, it was abandoned in the early Ming Dynasty, revived in Chenghua, gradually expanded at the beginning of Wanli, and then decayed only the ruins. Qianlong was rebuilt in 58 years, Jiaqing was rebuilt in 25 years, and Guangxu was renewed in 15 years. Since the twentieth century, Fuxian Temple has been destroyed in the war several catastrophes, the current temple department was rebuilt in the original site in the eighties of the last century, the temple is not small, and the incense is not vigorous. During festivals, there are often villagers who go out to look for the temple to worship the Buddha, but I have never heard the name of this temple when I was young.

It was the first month, the hall was empty and lonely, there were only three or two visitors, the footsteps heard each other, and the temple was empty, and the temple was cold. It was about the holiday, and there were no other monks in the temple, only a hunchbacked old man took care of the incense and candles. However, the hall is pure, the Sanskrit sound is good, on both sides of the stone steps leading to the Daxiong Treasure Palace, the forest is lush, the branches and leaves are old and green, a kumquat tree bears the golden and brilliant fruit of the tree, it seems to be in line with the meaning of meditation. Ni Yuanlu, a calligrapher from Yu in the late Ming Dynasty who was as famous as Huang Daozhou and Wang Duo, had studied hard here, and then became an official and went to the household department. Turning under the stone steps, there is a small hole, which can only allow one or two people to lean in and out. The stone wall at the entrance of the cave is engraved with the six characters of "Ge Xian Weng Alchemy Pool", the carving is diffuse, and most of it has been eroded by moss. Walking a few steps inside, I saw a small well, which reminded people of Ge Xianweng's Danjing. In fact, the ruins of Danjing have long been annihilated, and this place is naturally set up by today's people. This Ge Xianweng, some say it is Ge Xuan, and some say that it is Ge Hong. According to history, Ge Xuan's practice is all over the mountains and rivers in the south of the Yangtze River, and Lanxiong Mountain is one of them. "Shangyu County Chronicles" described its "victory in choosing Lanxiong and cultivating with things", and said that "Ge Yuan Danjing is in Lanxiong Mountain, 28 miles northwest of the county". However, according to the "Notes on the Book of Water", "foundation wells are preserved", which should also refer to Ge Hong. Qing Guangxu's "Shangyu County Chronicles School Continuation" recorded a number of poems about Lanxiong Mountain, almost all of which are related to Ge Xian. For example, Cao Zhang's poem "Lanxiong Danchi": "The fairy goes by Luan, and the Danchi survives." There is also Hu Jun's poem "Lanxiong Mountain": "Fishing rocks and ancient trees, Danjing recognizes barren moss." These two are Qing people, so it can be seen that the remains of Danjing were still there at that time.

In the seventh year of Yuan Dade, when the Fuxian Zen Monastery was completed, because "there is no gold and stone since Xiantong to remember its reason", the presiding monk Shi Kewen invited the then Shangyu Sect to write the "Shangyu County Lanxiong Mountain Fuxian Zen Monastery Record", remember the origin of the temple, and engrave the stele and stand the stone. The inscription of Zhao Mengfu was raised by the then Jixian Zhi Bachelor, the Doctor of the Dynasty, and the Confucianism of Xingjiang and Zhejiang. The original monument has been lost, and only rubbings remain. Therefore, the opportunity of the inscription, Ren Shilin and Zhao Mengfu met and made friends. Later, Ren Shilin died of illness, and Zhao Mengfu wrote an epitaph for him, commenting on his text: "Shushi's writing, heavy and upright, based on reason, not as a mouthpiece for tricky words, but subtle frustration, so that people read it and have an aftertaste." The epitaph inscription is inevitably overrated, but the "Record of the Fuxian Zen Monastery of Lanxiong Mountain in Shangyu County", which is included in the "Songxiang Collection", is indeed simple and calm, fresh and upright.

Fuxian Temple goes up further, the forest is deep and lush, and there is no mountain road to follow. I didn't get to look at the village I grew up in from the top of Lanxiong Mountain, as I imagined before I went up the mountain. The mysterious mountain that I could only look at from afar but didn't dare to set foot in when I was a child is now at my feet, which is a very trance-like feeling. The small village has never heard of the immortal name of Lanxiong Mountain, but I see the fog there every day, and borrow the products there from time to time. Whether it is Lanfeng Mountain, Lanxiong Mountain or Lanzhong Mountain, it is just the mountain in front of you. Interestingly, although Li Daoyuan had written about this mountain, he himself had never had the opportunity to go south to investigate the field because of the division between the north and the south at that time. His records about the landscapes of the Southern Dynasties were all based on literature searches. Regarding Lanxiong Mountain, the mountain on paper and the mountain in front of me seem to be completely two mountains, and because of the encounter one day, they finally merged in one place. This is probably also a kind of legend of life.
